Vancouver’s Next Top Charity 2010

Social media can be used for many purposes: sharing what you just ate for breakfast, finding out the score of the hockey game, or connecting with colleagues. One of my favourite aspects of the medium is that it can also be used for social good. Vancouver’s Next Top Charity is a video contest to help promote the under-promoted non-profits in our city.
To enter, the 12 finalist contestants produced a quick video about their organization. These entries are now up on the public voting page. The entry with the most votes will receive a prize pack including goodies from the sponsor companies as well as a cash donation to give them a boost.
There is also an auction on the contest’s website that will help raise the donation prize funds. Auction items include a cookbook from West, Crumpler bags, and more. If you would like to get involved either as a sponsor or prize donor you can contact the organizers by email: vntc[at]spotteddoing.com. This is the first event of its kind for the organizers so hopefully it can build some momentum going forward. Voting will continue until June 18, 2010.

Great to find out more about some of the lesser know but very valuable and important charities out there. This is a great way to promote awareness
However< I find it hard to believe that the BC Children's Hospital is considered an under-promoted charity. Watch Global and every hour there is at least 2 commercials promoting their various initiatives (including their video submission for this contest). Jeans Day is also a very well known BCCH campaign as well they receive tremendous corporate and private support. Although not as widely promoted, David Suzuki's foundation is also a very widely recognized charity in Vancouver. These are both wonderful charities that do amazing things and I am not saying they are undeseserving but if the goal of the contest is to help recognize under-promoted charities, these two fondations should not be involved.

You do wonderful things with your blog and it’s great to see that you are always promoting all types of different charity/fundraising events in the community and furthering your readers awareness of the various events going on in Vancouver.
Thanks for the lovely post! I’m one of the organizers of the event and one of the main goals is to give people a chance to get to know the local charities better through the videos. Of course, we are probably more familiar with BCCHF and David Suzuki. 🙂
