Dine Out Vancouver: Glowbal Grill

Comments 9 by Rebecca Bollwitt

This evening I had some friends in from out of town, one of which had never been to Vancouver before. When it came to selecting a spot for dinner I thought of Glowbal after meeting their social media guy (who runs @Glowbal_Group) at the Twestival event in March. We’re also right in the middle of Dine Out Vancouver, which made my menu selection a piece of cake.

I went with their $38 prix fixe Dine Out Vancouver menu that started with a roasted Beet and arugula salad topped with whipped garlic boursin cheese and sherry vinaigrette.

The other option for the starter was a sweet pea soup with dungeness crab and crème fraîche. For my main course I had three choices that included a grilled 8oz Canadian prime tenderloin with confit of fingerling potato, double smoked bacon, sour cream and chives or a wild mushroom risotto with shaved parmesan, watercress salad.

I went with the third option of a pan seared Queen Charlotte halibut with ragout of cannellini beans, green onion, tomato, and spinach.

My dinner companions ordered off the regular menu and eventually the biggest stuffed baked potato I’ve ever seen appeared before me. It was apparently just off the “sides” menu to accompany the streak but was packed to the gills with “lobster fondue”, bacon, gruyère, and downright heart-stopping goodness.

My friend dubbed it “magnanimous” (although probably not used in the right context) while also calling his own whipped potato “scrumptious”. The tasty adjectives were flying around the table as it became apparent that the baked potato was simply stuffed with too much to enabled devouring it in its entirety (or at least without help).

For dessert on the Dine Out menu I had the strawberry-rhubarb crumble with fresh berries and biscotti. It was really tasty but very filling.

The Dine Out menu offered a great menu sampling and if you’d like to experience Glowbal yourself, this is the prime time to do so. Sit out on the patio and do some people-watching or hone in on the big screen outside if there’s a particular hockey game you’d like to catch. The portions for Dine Out did not seem as though they were cut short or lacked substance, which made it even better.

Dine Out Vancouver is on now until May 6th with dozens of participating restaurants (with 3 different menu price points) taking part across the city.

Glad to hear you had a good experience. I just spoke to two different friends that had horrible reviews:

‘The worst service, they were out of a couple of the 8 beers they offered, we never received our calamari, the satays were very small- about 3-5$ each and you would get one skewer or one kobe meatball…we waited 1/2 hour for drinks, 1/2 more more a salad (wedge salad which was pretty good) and then another 1/2 hour for bill. I was totally disappointed, had a good dinner at the Itailan Kitchen not that long ago so was looking forward to trying Glowbal. I even sent them an email the next morning to tell them about how disappointed i was, never got any response. They should have been better than that, and been able to handle a busy night when we have just gotten thru the Olympics.

    And from friend 2:
‘We had our law firm Christmas lunch there a couple of years ago and it was equally as awful. My meal was stone cold. Service was mediocre at best. I was just really glad we weren’t paying. I haven’t been back since and I’m shocked it is still open.’

Was planning on taking some out of town friends for dinner..but change my mind after getting this feedback. Perhaps I will try it out on my own first.

@Roxanne From what I understand they’ve recently changed a lot of things around and it even looks different on the inside/outside. This was my first time there and we weren’t really in a rush so didn’t notice any lag time. There were about 3 guys on a patio the whole time making sure everyone was satisfied. It could have been because of Dine Out but after hearing your friend’s experience, hopefully it’s something they’ve improved upon and it will stay like that.

A friend of mine and I were visiting Vancouver and stumbled upon Glowbal. Loved it. We ate off of the Dine Out Vancouver menu also. It was all wonderful. Loved the specialty salts that they have.
