Vancouver History: Before and After Photos Part Two

Comments 10 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Last week my Vancouver History: Before and After Photos received such a great response that I’m making this a weekly feature. I started thinking of themes so this week’s series will feature bridges. As with last week, the original images are available through the City of Vancouver Archives.

Love these old photos! I’d be curious to see some of the city’s hotels…

Beautiful! It would be great to see our major parks if such before/after photos exist.

if you can find some other photos/ info about all the other bridges that head into the heart of Vancouver.

or some of the streets in Vancouver like Broadway, Cambie etc

maybe do a history before and after in each burb of the lower-mainland (be interesting to see) after you finish your Vancouver before and afters 🙂

Here is one that everyone will love. It’s from the City of Van site. These are survey photos that they stitched together. Click 1978 or 2003 and watch the change – the change is HUGE.

How about East Van? It amazes me some of the things that HAVEN’T changed, maybe just the number of restaurants/shops that come and go.

Well, the mountains haven’t changed much 🙂

How about Japantown – the Powell Street area? Vancouver City Councillor Geoff Meggs and I took a group through the area – one of the walking tours for the Japantown Multicultural Neighbourhood Celebration earlier this year. We stopped and talked about Chapel Arts, Carnegie Library/City Hall, Main & Alexander, Gore&Cordova, Oppenheimer Park, Japanese Language School, Ballantyne Pier, and Japanese Camp and Millworkers Union (544 Powell). Some dramatic changes in the area.

Thanks, RB, for this series. One of my earliest memories as a wae lad was going to VPL Central (Robson/Burrard), and borrowing a copy of “Vancouver: Then & Now” by Chuck Davis. Needless to say, multiple renewals and borrows followed …
