Prince George has this funny way of surprising you. The city known for fur trading, railways and sawmills has reinvented itself as a vibrant centre of commerce, shopping and festival spirit. What has never changed though is it’s stellar setting. It is still the gateway to wilderness adventure. FestivalSeekers sent a crew of writers — including me — up to discover what’s in store this summer. Put the canoe on the car and head north to see for yourself what we’ve all been missing (or… enter the contest and fly up instead). Here’s some inspiration on what’s waiting for you up there – search #TakeOnPG and explore:

Forget the snowman, do you want to build a skateboard?
Have you ever thought you could build a skateboard? At the MakerLab in Prince George it’s a possibility. Enjoy the story by Jeremy Derksen as he explores the artistic community hosting the BMO Kidzartz days coming up July 8-9. Find out what is planned for the kids during the free event. It may not be a skateboard but – who knows!
Dip in and paddle to the finish in Prince George
Ever wanted to see what it would be like to be a voyageur navigating the waterways of northern BC? Now’s your chance. To “test the waters,” Jeremy Derksen spent the day paddling the river into Prince George and wrote about his experience. Is he ready for the 67 kilometre race coming on July 10th? Read about the Northern Hardware Prince George Canoe Race and see if you are ready to sign on too.
Noshing through Summerfest sounds good
Food. Who can resist? Especially when its provided by chefs and restaurateurs who are the best at what they do. Traca Savadogo followed her nose through Prince George and sampled what will be offered at the July 17th Summerfest. Dig into her story here.
Take a tip of where to dine in Prince George
Summerfest in Prince George will be a big long party but hotdogs and root beer can’t be your only meal. Traca Savadogo shares her favourite locations in this FestivalSeekers story. Use her tips on where to find the best local beer, wine, fine dining and live entertainment.
Drag your body to the Zombie Fest in Prince George
Are you feeling a little undead? Do you need to unleash your inner zombie? Maybe a trip to the Prince George Zombie Fest will help you find your true self. Drag your body and drag your friend’s bodies to the July 23rd event. Find out what happened when I stepped into Ms. Lorea’s College of Esthetics for some “beautification.”
Paddle through the history of Prince George
Who says a classroom needs walls? I had a paddle and a canoe and learned so much about Prince George while floating down the Nechako River. The pioneers, the wildlife, the First Nations and the two rivers that meet at Prince George have had a major impact on the prosperous city. Read about my classroom on the river.

Burnaby Heights merchants celebrated their community this past Saturday during Hats Off Day. This free family event spanned Hastings Street, from Boundary to Gamma, with a jungle-themed parade, show & shine, activities, live entertainment, and plenty of street food. I was out of town but I followed the tag #HatsOffDay online and watched it trend in Vancouver, and in Canada. Here are some of the highlights that were shared:
I heard from so many people (on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram) about how they had never been to Hats Off Day before and they were so glad they went. From the dog-friendly street to dipped ice cream cones, dancing, yoga, colouring, and so much more free fun.
This morning Bell Media announced that its first foray into HD Radio is now live on the air in Vancouver. HD radio delivers crystal clear digital audio and feature-rich content from AM stations on the FM dial.
HD Radio in Vancouver
In Vancouver, you can tune into 103.5 QMFM (if you have an HD radio at home or in the car) and click through to 103.5-1 or 103.5-2 to listen to TSN 1040 and TSN 1410. They are now Canada’s first sports station to broadcast on HD/FM.
From this morning’s press release:
“With HD radio, 103.5 QM/FM becomes more feature-rich, displaying song title, album art, and artist information on listeners’ digital display panels, rounding out an enhanced listening experience. And with TSN 1040/1410’s transition to HD Radio, listeners can enjoy the station’s up-close coverage of UEFA EURO 2016 and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in HD.”
HD Radio can be enjoyed at home, on the road, or on the go, with portable or in-dash HD Radio devices receiving a signal over traditional radio waves, requiring no Internet connection or monthly fee. CKNW launched HD Radio in Vancouver a while ago as well, and they can be heard by tuning into Rock 101.1-2 on your FM dial to hear the AM station in HD.
How to Tune in
John and I listened to HD/FM on our road trip in the Honda Pilot we were driving. We tuned to 103.5 QMFM and waited a few seconds for the HD radio to kick in. You’ll notice a boost in sound quality and the display will say HD. Once that happens, use the seek buttons on the radio (or up/down, side/side) buttons to connect to 103.5-1 or 103.5-2. We found TSN Radio on 1, and TSN 1040 on 2.
I love radio (my husband works in radio) and this is exciting to see in Vancouver since its been around in the United States for almost a decade. I can’t wait to listen to my local sports team in HD the next time I’m on the road or at the beach.
After a successful Canada Sevens tournament we know one thing for sure: Vancouver loves rugby! I grew up playing the sport in high school and to this day the spot holds a special place in my heart. If you caught the rugby fever earlier this spring, you have the opportunity to once again support the Canadian men’s rugby team (15 a side) on June 11th as they take on Japan at BC Place.
Canadian Men’s Rugby at BC Place
This will be the first time the Canadian 15s men’s squad will have ever played in BC Place Stadium, and if the turn-out from fans around the Men’s Sevens is any indication, our Canadian men can look forward to an electric fan atmosphere.
Tickets for this match are available via Ticketmaster and range from $20-$160 plus applicable fees and taxes. Doors open at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 11, 2016 and kick off is at 3:00pm at BC Place.
The Japan-Canada match is the first in the set of three Summer Series matches that will see Canada take on Russia and Italy in Calgary and Toronto respectively. The series is particularly exciting as Team Canada introduces their new head coach, Mark Anscombe, the former New Zealand U-20 coach, who is committed to bringing rugby to the forefront in Canadian sports.
Japan is coming off of a thrilling Rugby World Cup where they knocked off rugby powerhouse South Africa in the pool stages and have begun preparations as they host the 2019 edition of the tournament. Canada has not won against Japan since 2005, and this match has the opportunity to be one of the most crucial matches for Canada. Considered to be traditional rivals, this is a match that will not disappoint.
Win Tickets
I have a pair of tickets to give away to the game on June 11th, here’s how you can enter to win:
