This weekend-long street fair features music from some of the hottest Celtic music groups around on the car2go Main Stage and Howe Street Stage, highland games demos, BC’s best pipe bands, amazing street performers, festive vendors, face painting, and more.
Village visitors can also shop at the street market for an array of Celtic treasures and the works of gifted artisans, and sample from a tempting selection of food and fare. Friends and families can gather and wander, soaking in that special Celtic spirt all weekend long.

Saturday, March 18, 2017: The Paperboys with special guests including Tiller’s Folly, Wheat in the Barley, Pat Chessell Band and Eire Born Irish Dancers.
Other programming includes the six times world champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band the “Salute to Scotland” with pipers, dancers and caber tossing, and more. The car2go stage will feature North Shore Celtic Ensemble, Jocelyn Pettit, O’Brien Dancers, and many more. View the schedule online.

Families and kids of all ages can expect to experience fun and enlightening activities this Spring Break at the Britannia Mine Museum with three weeks of workshops, interpretive talks, science experiments and a geoscience dig day from Monday, March 13, 2017 to Friday, March 31, 2017.

We love the museum because it has unique activities (like riding into the side of a mountain through an old mining tunnel), combined with lots of cool local history. Check out some of the Spring Break programming for event more fun for the whole family:
Life at Britannia: March 13, 15 & 17 @ 12:00pm to 2:00pm
Take a peek at a piece of Canadian history. Interpreters will illuminate about what life was like at Britannia Mine. Hear the stories behind some of the Museum’s historical archival photos and get hands on with real artifacts from a time when Britannia was a bustling mining town.
Tinker Labs: March 20, 22 & 24 @ 12:00pm to 2:00pm
Ever wonder what’s inside a favourite toy, how a phone or computer works? Tinker Labs gives kids and adults a chance to take apart everyday objects using real tools to investigate their inner workings. Interpreters will be on hand to help visitors explore and learn more about the devices we use in our daily lives.
DIG DAY – Delving into Geoscience: Saturday, March 25 @ 11:00am to 3:00pm
The Museum is partnering with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC and will feature entertaining and educational activities from geoscientists. Visitors can learn about volcanoes, fossils and minerals through engaging activity stations. Instantly grow crystals between microscope slides, learn about tectonic plates by building “Pangea” puzzles, or make a dinosaur diorama to take home.
The Art of Science: March 27, 29 & 31 @ 12:00pm to 2:00pm
Kids can bring their thirst for creativity, science and art for a week of art-themed science experiments. Create explosive art, make toys and bouncy balls using chemistry, learn about aerodynamics with paper airplanes, and dive into geometry.

The Britannia Mine Museum provides unique and memorable experiences that engage visitors of all ages. Visitors can enjoy fun exhibits and crowd favourites like the underground mine train, the historic 20-storey concentrator mill and gold panning, and learn about Britannia’s history as one of the largest copper mines in the British Commonwealth in the 1930s.

Herons of Stanley Park
For almost 100 years, herons have called Stanley Park “home”. The earliest known record of these magnificent birds dates back to a 1921 photo by Leonard Frank of a colony near Brockton Point. Even back then, the great blue herons captivated onlookers and Park users.

Nobody knows exactly when the herons will return—or if this is the year the herons abandon the colony and change location. With an unseasonably cold winter filled with ice and snow, the Pacific great blue herons did not return to their nests at all in February. A few birds landed in the trees briefly last week. However, they quickly disappeared after a couple short hours. Those were the only glimpses of the birds we saw near their colony by the tennis courts in Stanley Park.
Finally, on March 9, several birds landed in the trees. A day later saw more than a dozen Pacific great blue herons claiming nests in the trees. This is an extremely promising sign that they will use this location to nest again this year, just as they have since 2001. There is even one pair of birds engaging in different courtship behaviours.
