Win a Night Out at the PuSh Festival with Chambar

Comments 70 by Rebecca Bollwitt

PuSh International Performing Arts Festival and Coastal Jazz present dirtsong, with Australia’s Black Arm Band, an ensemble of acclaimed Indigenous artists who will perform harmonies and vocals in nearly a dozen languages, drawing on 40,000 years of tradition to showcase their country’s rich culture. Behind them, projections of vivid Australian landscapes – from vast plains to outback communities – will become illuminated in stunning documentary film.

Where: Queen Elizabeth Theatre (650 Hamilton St, Vancouver)
When: Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 8:00pm
Tickets: Call (604) 449-6000 or online via Ticketfly

This spectacular ensemble, that specializes in Aboriginal music and languages, pulls audiences into sweeping and intoxicating visions of its Indigenous peoples and homeland – from vast plains to outback communities. Against a backdrop of stunning documentary, with driving percussion, didgeridoo, and deeply soulful vocals, the group performs songs in a dozen languages, including some now virtually extinct.

Touring for the first time in Canada — in the 150th year of a nation born from the displacement of its Indigenous peoples – dirtsong is more poignant than ever.

With driving percussion, didgeridoo virtuosity, and soulful vocals, audiences will hear 11 Indigenous dialects – some virtually extinct – as they embark on a musical journey through the heartland of Australia. Sharing five narrative episodes based on the writings of Aboriginal author Alexis Wright, the performers are accompanied by striking cinematography that will conjure places, memories, and encounters, as well as moments of community and natural wonder.

February Theatre Listings in Vancouver

One of my favourite Vancouver date night activities with my husband is a dinner and a show, which is why I’m so excited to partner with the Jessie Awards this year to bring you monthly theatre listings.

The Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards are an annual awards ceremony and party produced by the Jessie Richardson Theatre Award Society to celebrate and promote the outstanding achievements of the Vancouver Professional Theatre Community.

Follow this heartwarming story of how home can be found in sport and unite family across nations.

am a
Presented by Mindy Parfitt and Amber Funk Barton
Vancity Culture Lab at The Cultch

am a explores identity through the lens of neuroplasticity, a science that examines the brain’s capacity for change. But how do we change our brains? And if we can change, how far can we go? Using personal text, scientific writings, dance, song, and frivolity to explore personal confrontation, am a is a celebration of being human. Of daring to succeed. Of daring to fail.

Alone Together by George F. Walker
Presented by Green Thumb Theatre
Various schools
February 15 to April 9, 2017
Alone Together tells the story of sisters Jess and Cara, ages 15 and 16, who have recently run away from an unpredictable and increasingly frightening home-life. Facing challenges beyond any they anticipated, the girls begin to realize that a life on the streets may not be a long-term solution, but the question remains, which environment poses the greater threat – the one they left behind, or the one that lies ahead? Alone Together is a moving portrait of the difficult choices youth in crisis are often presented with.

Freddie in the Neighbourhood
Presented by The Little Onion Puppet Company
Mount Pleasant Community Centre
