This winter I partnered with SnowSeekers, with whom I have done a few fun assignments, to share their #SkiNorthBC stories from destinations in Northern BC.

The team visited Powder King, Terrace, Smithers, Quesnel, Troll Ski Resort, spent 72 Hours in Smithers and explored Hudson Bay Mountain. The seventh story is from SnowSeekers #SkiNorthBC expedition member Dax Justin who shares what he got up to with 72 Hours in Terrace

72 Hours in Terrace

Terrace was actually the first stop on the #SkiNorthBC expedition, and even before landing in this northern town of 13,000, photographer and adventurer Dax Justin got the inside scoop from a local who was seated beside him on the plane. Aside from talking to locals, the best way to get to know a region is to learn about its history. In this case, Dax went to Kitselas Canyon to learn about the Kitselas Nation.

“Long before this area was known for its recreational opportunities, it was home to the Kitselas people, a tribe of the Tsimshian Nation, who’ve lived in the area for thousands of years. I wanted to find out more meet some people from the community.

Kitselas Canyon, on the banks of the Skeena River, is just outside of Terrace. The Kitselas or “People of the Canyon” are among the five Tsimshian Nations to call the Northwest Coastal Region of BC home.”

Dax and the team met up with Webb Bennett, a member of the band, who toured him around the area. “We have four clans represented by these totem poles. Wolf, Eagle, Raven, and Killer Whale. Your clan affiliation depends on what your birth mother was; so since my Mother is a ‘Ganhada’ (Raven), I myself and my siblings are Ravens.”

Bennett told them how his people have been the “protectors” of this region. Preserving and sustaining the well-being of everyone in the four clans was the priority for the Kitselas. And everyone pitched in to make the community strong. If you were old enough to walk, you worked to help the community. Looking over at Kitselas Mountain, Dax asked him what the mountain would say if it could speak… read his moving reply in the SnowSeekers story ».

What else did Dax and the team get up to in 72 hours? Cross country skiing at Onion Lake, a rewarding evening of apres at Sherwood Mountain Brewhouse, a comfy stay at Skeena River House B&B, and deep, fluffy snow at Shames Mountain.

One of Vancouver’s many virtues is that while it’s a gorgeous city in its own right, it’s also so close to many experiences and getaway destinations. I had the opportunity to plot and plan my own staycation recently, driving out to Cultus Lake to hang out with friends for the weekend. The catch? I was in a super slick, quieter than Judy Jetson’s vehicle, high-tech, electric car. The challenge, which I chose to accept, was to have an energy-saving staycation with BC Hydro, and I had such a blast!

Vancouver’s legendary Theatre Under the Stars (“TUTS”) has announced that its 2017 summer season will include performances of Mary Poppins and The Drowsy Chaperone. This pair of Broadway blockbusters will make for a music-filled summer at Stanley Park’s scenic Malkin Bowl, running July 7th to August 19th.

Theatre Under the Stars 2017

TUTS Vancouver

For more than 75 years, Theatre Under the Stars has brought soaring works of musical theatre to the crown jewel of Vancouver – Stanley Park. So much more than just a night at the theatre, TUTS interweaves a kaleidoscope of elements – setting, scenery, concessions, and quality art – into a fun, encompassing experience that is much greater than the sum of its parts.

“Last year was our most successful summer on record – more than 45,000 guests passed through our gates!” says Naveen Kapahi, TUTS Board President. “In 2017, we will build on this momentum by putting our patrons in the talented hands of two of the Lower Mainland’s most celebrated directors. Shel Piercy will follow-up last summer’s epic Beauty and the Beast with Mary Poppins; and we are thrilled to welcome Capilano University’s theatre luminary Gillian Barber as director of The Drowsy Chaperone.”

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, one of the most popular Disney movies of all time, captures hearts in a whole new way! The irresistible story and unforgettable songs are back, as everyone’s favourite nanny swoops in to teach the Banks family a lesson or two about love & imagination.

The Drowsy Chaperone is bursting with show-stopping song and dance. This Canadian musical parody & five-time Tony Award-winner whisks audiences away on a Jazz Age journey of love, laughter, and libation. Alone in his modest, one-bedroom apartment, a musical theatre fan puts on his treasured cast recording. As the record spins, the colourful & chaotic characters of a fictitious 1928 musical spring to life – filling his living room with all manner of movie stars, gangsters, divas, and more.

TUTS will once again offer a two-show subscription pack – allowing audiences to secure their seats to both productions for one great price. On sale now through May 6th, subscriptions are $70 for adults, $50 for children & youth, and include Premium tickets to both productions, souvenir programmes, and exchange insurance for both nights. Book online or call 1-877-840-0457. Single Tickets go on sale May 16th.

All shows at 8:00pm, except on Fireworks Nights, when shows begin at 7:00pm. Follow TUTS on Facebook and Twitter for more information.
