Vancouver International Flamenco Festival

The 2017 Festival proudly presents the local debut of La Moneta at the Vancouver Playhouse on September 23rd. Hailing from Granada, Spain, Fuensanta “La Moneta” possesses a deep expressive dramatic quality and an incredible mastering of compás (the intricate flamenco rhythm). Her innate talent allows her to dance even the most difficult styles as easily as she breathes the ancient form of art. Although her approach seems contemporary, her dancing style seems as ancient as the flamenco that flows through her veins. La Moneta consists of dancer/choreographer Fuensanta “La Moneta”; cantaors, Juan Ángel Tirado and Sergio Gómez “El Colarao”; and guitarist, Luis Mariano. Continue reading this post ⟩⟩

Citywide Food Drive for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank is hosting the 2nd annual Vancouver Citywide Food Drive on September 16th, online and in person, making it easy to give where you live this season.

At Your Door

You can contribute by leaving nutritious, non-perishable food items on your doorsteps before 9:00am on Saturday, September 16, 2017 using one of the 38,000 paper bags that will be left in front of local homes in advance. Greater Vancouver Food Bank staff and volunteers will then collect bags from doorsteps in Vancouver, New Westminster, Burnaby and the North Shore.

The food bank is looking to collect 100,000 lbs of food, almost doubling last year’s haul of 53,000 lbs. The best food items for donation are: canned fish, canned chicken or turkey; canned black beans, chickpeas, and kidney beans; whole grains and whole-wheat pasta; and canned vegetables and fruit.

Drop-Off

Volunteers and staff will be onsite at three locations on September 16th to collect food donations from the public: Save On Foods on Brooksbank in North Vancouver, Save On Foods on Kingsway & Willingdon in Burnaby and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on West 41st in Vancouver.

Online

Donate to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank directly online, where each $1 donated can be leveraged, with the food bank’s bulk purchasing power, to provide $3 worth of food to the over 26,500 individuals in Greater Vancouver who access their services every week.

Every week 26,500 people access our services at locations in Vancouver, Burnaby, North Vancouver, and New Westminster. 20% are children and 19% are seniors. Each year, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank distributes 4.1 million pounds of food. This campaign leads into Hunger Awareness Week in Canada.

Follow along on Facebook and Twitter for more information about participating in the Citywide Food Drive on September 16th.

September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month

Imagine a world with more self-esteem and less bullying. Imagine a world where youth are reminded that they be anything they can dream of. You can be a part of creating that world. All you have to do is volunteer!

September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month

Did you know that when a child is mentored through Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, the odds they will succeed economically and socially increase dramatically. They are 17% more likely to be employed, 63% more likely to earn a post secondary education, and 80% more likely to live a healthy lifestyle. In fact, for every dollar invested in mentoring, $18 to $23 is returned back to society.

When we have happy, healthy young people in our communities, everyone benefits. Learn how you can make a difference in the life of a young person by visiting www.bigsisters.bc.ca.

Imagine being the fun parent all the time—that’s what Christy had in mind when she signed up to be a Big Sister. She made the choice to not have kids, but still wanted to give back to someone younger. She loves being a Big Sister because she gets to be the “cool mom” once a week and hang out with her awesome Little Sister, Eleanor. They love cooking together and they have big plans for the future.

Big Brothers Big Sisters can help many young Canadians achieve more but they need your support to build capacity. Too many kids are missing an opportunity of their lifetime. Please donate or volunteer for Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. Imagine who they will become because of you.

When: Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 10:00am
Participation: Register online now for the 5km walk for $25 (plus fee). Dogs are welcome to tag along and you can grab a free ticket for them online as well.

Each Walk for the Kitties participant pledges to raise funds for VOKRA to help in their mission to end cat overpopulation and homelessness. VOKRA is a 100% volunteer driven organization that relies on donations and fundraising for their support. They take in over 1,400 cats a year and they don’t even have a shelter! They rely on a foster network of over 350 homes in the Lower Mainland to care for these animals.

Here’s how your contributions will help:
$25 buys a flat of food
$50 provides one cat with care for a month
$85 covers the cost of one spay/neuter
$100 buys 20 nursing kits used to feed orphaned kittens

Donations, pledges, and support from the Walk for the Kitties will help VOKRA buy food, litter, and even spay/neuter treatments for local cats. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for more information.
