Ballet BC Program 3

Where: Queen Elizabeth Theatre (650 Hamilton St, Vancouver)
When: 8:00pm May 11-13, 2017

Program 3 features world premieres by choreographers Emanuel Gat, Emily Molnar and the Ballet BC premiere of Minus 16 by Ohad Naharin.

Israeli choreographer Emanuel Gat is applauded around the world for his work that “knows how to bend tradition with craft.” As the Artistic Director of Emanuel Gat Dance in France, his original voice is one of rare beauty and humanity that engulfs the stage with expansive spirit, architecture, intelligence, and intimacy. For this evening Gat will create a new 30 min work for the full company. Ballet BC is enthusiastic to collaborate with Emanuel and to be exposed to the many facets of his creative mind and choreographic craft.

Ballet BC’s Artistic Director Emily Molnar continues to investigate her work as a choreographer with the passionate and dedicated artists of Ballet BC. The National Arts Centre has commissioned Molnar to create this vibrant new work as part of ENCOUNT3RS, which pairs three Canadian choreographers with three Canadian composers to create works with original scores, in celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary. ENCOUNT3RS will be presented on the prestigious NAC Dance Ballet Series in April 2017 with the NAC Orchestra. Molnar’s creation, set to a commissioned score by the “brilliant musical scientist”, Canadian composer Nicole Lizée, will be brought directly to Vancouver audiences after its world premiere in Ottawa.

Ballet BC is thrilled to present for the first time a work by the revered Israeli choreographer and Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance Company, Ohad Naharin. Originally created in 1999 and set to an eclectic score ranging from Dean Martin to mambo, techno to traditional Israeli music, Minus 16 has been thriving on the world stage for years with a surprising playfulness that makes each performance unique. The work is distinct for removing the barrier between performer and audience and for its mesmerizing use of improvisation in connection with Naharin’s innovative movement language known as “Gaga.”

Tickets range from $21.25 to $91.25 (plus applicable charges) and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 1-855-985-2787 (855-985-ARTS) or online.

Better Together, an active online community forum, designed to celebrate family meals, cooking, and trying new recipes, has just launched the 8th annual Hands-on Cook-off contest across BC.

This contest celebrates the importance of cooking and eating together. This year’s contest theme is celebrating and redefining “family”. Here in BC, family means something different to all of us and Better Together BC would like to see what it means to people across the province! Whether we’re married, single or new to Canada, breaking bread together is a grounding and deeply bonding tradition for individuals, families, and for communities. The Hands-on Cook-off contest is a fun reminder to us all to make space in our lives for being together.

The Hands-on Cook-off contest was inspired by research that shows that when families cook and eat together, kids gain many valuable benefits—including better grades in school, better physical and mental health, and better overall social adaptability.

About the Contest

How you can enter: From April 18th until noon of May 18th, any BC resident can enter the Hands-on Cook-off contest. Videos must include two or more people preparing a recipe together… and having fun! Videos must be no longer than three minutes in length and can be entered online here.

Judges: TV personality and cook, Art Napoleon; Michelle Tang, Co-founder of Foodie Kids Inc.; Chef Paul Cecconi of Brodo Kitchen; Rebecca Coleman of Cooking By Laptop; and award-winning cooking instructor, Chef Heidi Fink.

Criteria: Judges look for creativity, clarity interaction, that x-factor, and most importantly cooking together and having fun- whether it’s kids and parents, or two friends. View the full contest rules and regulations here.

Prize details & value: Several cash prizes of $1,000 and $500 will be awarded in different categories to individuals and schools. Total prizes up for grabs are valued at over $4,000. Full prizing details can be found here.

Instagram Shorts

For the first time this year, you can also enter a shorter video in the Instagram category for a chance to win a $250 Amazon.ca gift card! Simply follow and tag @bettertogetherbc and include the hashtag #handsoncookoff. Videos must be one minute or less and feature two generations cooking together. One winner will be chosen by random draw. Full details on contest website.

Better Together BC exists because eating together, whether as a family or otherwise, offers many health and social benefits for both children and adults – including better nutrition, school performance and social adjustment.

Red Truck Beer Summer Concert Series 2017

Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

Red Truck Beer is bringing back its Truck Stop Concert Series for a third year, with three summer outdoor concerts live from East Vancouver’s historic Brewery Creek neighbourhood.

Red Truck Beer Summer Concert Series

This year’s schedule will launch with a June 17th synth-pop show headlined by Australian legends Cut/Copy. Cut/Copy are a festival favourite who’ll be playing classics from albums like In Ghost Colours and Free Your Mind along with tracks from their upcoming album.

On July 15th, the country and Americana showcase takes over with Drake White and the Big Fire at the top of the poster. This Alabama-raised and Nashville-based singer came up the hard way, working in construction while he chased his music dreams. With a top-5 debut album and a series of sold-out shows under their belts, they’re sure to light up the concert series in July.

The series will finish on August 12th with a soul and funk themed bill led by the mighty Lee Fields & The Expressions. Nicknamed “Little JB” because of his vocal and physical resemblance to James Brown, Lee Fields has been a soul mainstay for nearly 50 years, and he’s still going strong, bringing deep down funk and soul to stages across the world. It’s going to be a soul explosion when he hits the Red Truck stage.

Each event will feature two stages for non-stop music, along with food trucks and free-flowing delicious craft beer.

Also on Stage

This year’s headliners will be supported by great local and Canadian talent, and confirmed support slot signings include: Youngblood and Band of Rascals on June 17th; The Dungarees, Chris Buck Band, Kristin Bunyan, and Sykamore on July 15th; and Vince Vaccaro, and The Real Ponchos on August 12th.

Each show also has one opening slot reserved for the winner of the Artist Submission contest. Unsigned local acts can submit their demos for a chance to be part of the bill and show off their music in front of 1,500 music fans. Beer tickets are also available for purchase online before show day to make sure that you’re always in the fast lane at the beer tent.

Tickets

General admission tickets are $35 for each show and go on sale at 10:00am on April 21st. Red Truck offers two ways to beat the traffic with $75 transferrable Tailgate Passes that are good for admission to all three shows, and $25 Early Bird single show tickets available from 10:00am April 18th until 10:00am on April 21st to truckers who’ve signed up for express concert news delivery.

Music fans can get the most up to date concert line ups and ticket news online and can sign up to be eligible for early bird tickets.
