Last year I discovered a newly re-opened ski resort perched above BC’s South Okanagan wine country and it blew my mind. Expansive terrain, amazing conditions, no line-ups for lifts, free hot chocolate around an open fire at sunset, an a rockin’ lodge bar. This year, Baldy Mountain Resort is open again, building on the momentum from last year’s debut, and they’re kicking things off in style with the First Chair Festival.
First Chair Festival at Baldy Mountain Resort
Where: 2680 Mount Baldy Rd, Oliver, BC When: Friday, December 8 to Sunday, December 10, 2017
I had the chance to talk Baldy‘s new general manager, Andy Foster, when I was researching a post for SnowSeekers:
Andy and his team have been working hard to deliver even more this season, on top of their 260 acres of graded runs, and the First Chair Festival will be the ultimate showcase of those efforts. The resort actually has 600 acres of skiable terrain.
“Since I came on six months ago, we really wanted to focus on enhancing the customer experience and adding value to what we already have, which is great terrain, a great mountain, and a great community,” says Andy.
There will be a lot of family activities, including a kids’ slalom course on the magic carpet, a scavenger hunt, tobogganing, and hot chocolate around the fire pit. You can try out the disc golf competition (with an awards ceremony in the newly renovated Baldy Bar for apres), along with free guided snowshoeing, and tours with mountain hosts to share hidden gems.
No matter your age or level of activity, you’ll enjoy the First Chair Festival! Ski Baldy and Stay Osoyoos (like I did last season) with these awesome package deals. Stay at the Coast Osoyoos Beach Hotel or Walnut Beach Resort which both have beautiful South Okanagan accommodations and offers with Baldy.

While the days are getting longer, with the sun setting in the late afternoon, the lights of Vancouver’s marquees are illuminated with entertainment options.
John and I love to celebrate Vancouver’s seasonal charms through date day/date night activities. In the summer, it’s a walk through Stanley Park and a picnic at Third Beach, or a performance at Granville Island followed by a water taxi and a walk home along the Sea Wall. There’s photowalks through cherry blossom groves or fallen rust-coloured leaves in the spring or autumn, followed by mulled wine at an outdoor market and skating at Robson Square with hot chocolate grasped in mittened hands.
There are many traditions and date night options in the city but my favourite, especially in the winter, is dinner on South Granville, sipping a crafted cocktail, then catching a show at the Stanley Theatre. Of course, that isn’t your only option and we’re lucky to have so many holiday theatre shows on stage in Vancouver right now. Here are just a few to get you thinking about your next night out, because there’s no reason to hibernate this winter when the city is glowing with entertainment options.

The 19th edition of the CP Holiday Train is ready to support communities and raise awareness across Canada as it sets out to visit 171 communities and host free events in November and December. There are over 20 stops in BC, from Sparwood to Port Coquitlam, with each featuring an opportunity to view the impressive train-long light displays and enjoy a free concert.
CP Holiday Train
Beginning in Montreal, Quebec, on November 25 and 26, 2017 respectively, two trains will make the festive journey, travelling through both the United States and Canada to bring holiday cheer to 171 communities along CP’s network. Each event is completely free, with CP encouraging every attendee to open their cupboards or wallets to ease hunger needs in their community. Local food banks will be accepting donations at each stop to ensure those less fortunate can access adequate food this holiday season and year-round.
The 2017 edition of the Holiday Train also concludes CP’s Canada 150 celebrations and the Canadian train will feature the Spirit of Tomorrow car, which was part of the Canada 150 Train this past summer.
Local Schedule
Alan Doyle and The Beautiful Band will roll up into the Fraser Valley on December 16th for a show stop in Agassiz, then head over to Haney-Maple Ridge for another, and will end the night in Pitt Meadows. The train will roll on December 17th with the two final stops and performances in Port Moody and Port Coquitlam.
How The Events Work
When the train arrives it will pull to a safe stop in front of the crowd in attendance. The stage door lowers and the band opens with its first song. After that, a brief presentation takes place with local food bank officials and other dignitaries.
Once complete, the band resumes performing a mix of traditional and modern holiday-themed songs. The whole event lasts about 30 minutes, and once the band plays its farewell show, the boxcar door closes, and the train slips off into the night on its way to the next stop.
The spectacular event is free to attend, but you are encouraged to bring healthy donations for the food bank. Every pound of food and dollar raised at each stop stays with the local food bank to help feed those in need in that community.
The CP Holiday Train program launched in 1999 and has since raised more than $13 million and four million pounds of food for communities along CP’s routes in Canada and the United States.

Last Thursday, 118 guests turned out in support of the Dan’s Legacy 4th annual Chef’s Charity Dinner at the Vancouver Club and raised $46,765. The funds will go towards the charity’s counselling and life-skills programs for youth affected by trauma-based mental health and addictions challenges.

“We’re over the moon at the phenomenal outpouring of support from everyone who attended,” says Barbara Coates, Executive Director of Dan’s Legacy. “Our message of harm prevention, especially in the context of the ever-escalating opioid health crisis, found a receptive and responsive audience. We made a lot of new friends which will have a huge impact in helping us grow our counselling services, and extending our reach to some of the most vulnerable youth in Metro Vancouver.”
The inimitable Fred Lee was on hand once again to serve as the evening’s MC, which featured the delightful culinary creations of Chefs Sean Cousins (Vancouver Club), Dr. Theresa Nicassio (YUM), Dino Renaerts (Bon Vivant Group), Shay Kelly (The Caterer) and Saskia Nollen (Vancouver Club).
Special guests included: BC’s Representative for Children and Youth Bernard Richard; former BC Finance Minister Carole Taylor; Jan Grude, President and CEO of Pacific Blue Cross; and Brenden Graham from Coast Capital Savings.
The charity also launched its film “Passages”, which tells the stories of three young people whose lives were helped immeasurably thanks to Dan’s Legacy’s therapeutic counselling and life-skills programs.
If you missed the gala but would like to support Dan’s Legacy, or if you know someone battling mental health and addictions issues who is asking for help, please visit the website or call Tom Littlewood (Program Director) at 604-999-9136 or Barbara Coates (Executive Director) at 604-329-9186, or barb(at)danslegacy(dot)com.
