Valentine’s Day Speed Dating

Comments 13 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Canada’s largest speed dating company, Dashing Date, is back at it again with their annual coast-to-coast Valentine’s Day event. On February 14th, over 200 pre-screened Canadian singles across 5 cities will give their phone the night off, speed-date, and give real human connection a chance again.

Valentine’s Day Speed Dating

This year, contrary to Dashing Date’s usual light-hearted style, TRULY MADLY DEEPLY! Valentine’s Day Speed Dating will boast an all-encompassing romantic theme. 11 events for singles in their 20s, 30s and over 40 are happening on Valentine’s Day evening a mari usque ad mare, each tailored to a specific age range. All guests attending will take part in Dashing Date’s Secret Admirer gift-exchange and can expect ice-breaker games, speed dating, a chic ambiance and, as always, an expertly-hosted event.

5 years ago, while the concept of “Swiping” took front and centre, turning the dating arena into a revolving door of never-ending choices, Dashing Date set out to bring the human-connection back to the scene with their in-person events for eligible singles and modern approach to matchmaking.

With an overflow of lacklustre dating apps, Dashing Date Founder and Dating Expert, Kavita Ajwani, noticed there was a lack of intimacy and genuine desire to find a committed relationship. Online dating being so saturated and predictable, the need to meet singles in real life was in dire need of a comeback, enter Dashing Date!

“With countless couples now in long-term relationships after meeting at our events, we’ve proven that connecting with humans in real life will never go out of style. Taking a night off from swiping can result in finding the love of your life” explains Ajwani. “We already spend hours in front of screens and, for something as personal as meeting someone to date, singles are looking for a fresh and more personal alternative. It’s time to unplug our phones and connect to people instead.”

There are two events in Vancouver:

TRULY MADLY DEEPLY! SPEED DATING For Ages 25-37, happening at Lickerish Lounge located at 903 Davie St. Start time is 7:30PM. Regular ticket price is $39.

TRULY MADLY DEEPLY! SPEED DATING For Ages 36-48, happening at The Emerald located at 555 Gore Ave. Start time is 7:30PM. Regular ticket price is $42.

Are you a local single? Do you know a local single that would love this night out? I have a spot to give away at each event, here’s how you can win your way in!

Megaphone Magazine Big Sell

Street papers like Megaphone do this event around the world to celebrate the hard work of 10,000 vendors. I participated in the event in 2016, alongside Janet, who was a total pro! It was the first time Vancouver’s Megaphone participated in the event and it was a huge success. Vendors and guest vendors sold more than 250 copies of Megaphone in just under an hour.

Megaphone is an award-winning social enterprise that provides an economic opportunity and a voice to people experiencing poverty and homelessness in Vancouver and Victoria. We produce the monthly Megaphone Magazine, annual Hope in Shadows calendar, and annual Voices of the Street literary edition. All are sold by our street vendors to generate income.

We work with more than 200 marginalized people in British Columbia every year through their vendor and writing workshop programs.

Find a vendor in Vancouver or Victoria to buy your magazine. Just $2 supports meaningful work for people experiencing poverty in your community, and gets you a great read in return. Download the Megaphone App for iPhone and Android to find & pay vendors, even when you don’t have cash.

Buy a Megaphone Magazine at the Big Sell on Tuesday. Megaphone’s 160+ vendors in Vancouver and Victoria work hard every day to create positive change in their own lives, and in the communities we share. Follow the conversation online @MegaphoneMag.

New Whitecaps FC Unity Jersey for 2018

Vancouver Whitecaps FC unveiled a new steel grey “Unity Jersey” today, created in collaboration with adidas. This is the first time in club history that Whitecaps FC have had a grey match day kit, drawn from the silver and grey outline on the club’s logo.

The “Unity Jersey” represents the union of fans, club, and city, symbolized through the subtle interlocking pattern on the front of the jersey – similar to what is seen in a steel structure. Steel grey is a nod to the Ironworkers of British Columbia who have built and bridged our communities.

“This year we wanted to represent the heart of Vancouver, and that’s the grit and hard work of our city,” said Bob Lenarduzzi, president of Whitecaps FC. “I grew up in East Vancouver, blocks from the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge. Today I regularly cross that bridge, as well as the Lions Gate Bridge, from the other side in North Vancouver. These structures are examples of how our communities in the Lower Mainland have been united. With 2018 marking the 60th anniversary of the tragic collapse during construction of the Second Narrows Bridge, we decided to pay tribute to all ironworkers and all people who are building and bridging our communities.”

“We are very excited and honoured that Vancouver Whitecaps FC have chosen a new jersey that reflects and remembers the grit and determination of British Columbia’s Ironworkers,” said Doug Parton, business manager for Ironworkers Union Local 97.

“Ironworkers love going to work every day, building soccer stadiums, hospitals, bridges, and so much more. We like to say that we’ve been building bridges between communities for years, which is something that Whitecaps FC have also been doing. Sometimes the work ironworkers do comes with a price, such as when the Second Narrows Bridge collapsed in 1958, while under construction. Every year we hold a memorial for the eighteen workers who perished that day, as well as the ones who amazingly survived. This year’s memorial of the 60th Anniversary of the Bridge collapse will be much more special knowing we have the support of Whitecaps FC and their fans.”

Metro Vancouver is connected by more than 20 bridges throughout the Lower Mainland, linking Richmond, the Fraser Valley, North and West Vancouver, and every community in between.

“Bridges are a metaphor for all that connects us in Vancouver, which you see in the interlocking pattern on the front of the jersey,” said Mikkel Strojer, Whitecaps FC vice president of brand & fan engagement. “Our campaign features the jersey on both players and fans, in unity, as every person is equal and important for club and community.”

Players will wear the new Unity Jersey for the first time on Tuesday, February 13th in a special visit to BC Children’s Hospital featuring Aly Ghazal, Kei Kamara, Aaron Maund, Jake Nerwinski, Brian Rowe, and Russell Teibert. The kit will be available at the Official Whitecaps FC Store in Gastown that same day, with Alphonso Davies, Efrain Juarez, Kamara, and Kendall Waston signing autographs from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

As one of the three largest non-commercial annual parades in Vancouver, the parade features the largest assembly of traditional lion dance teams in Canada with dozens of colourful and energetic lions from various local fraternal and martial arts organizations.

The parade will feature 70 entries, bringing over 3,000 participants from various community and cultural groups. The multicultural dance troupes represent the diverse segments of our Canadian cultural heritage such as the Vancouver Police Department Motorcycle Drill Team, marching bands and various community groups. It is not surprising that the parade draws over 100,000 spectators along the route each year plus many more that will see it through TV coverage.
