Zee Zee Theatre Presents My Funny Valentine: Win Tickets

Comments 17 by Rebecca Bollwitt

In honour of its 10th anniversary, Zee Zee Theatre proudly presents the remount of its heartrending masterwork My Funny Valentine at The Dance Centre. Hailed as “exceptionally beautiful” (Vancouver Courier), this three-time Jessie-nominated one-man show was created in response to the tragic 2008 murder of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old shot by his male classmate after asking him to be his valentine. In a series of profoundly moving monologues, Vancouver actor Conor Wylie will take audiences through the minds of those caught in the aftermath of an unspeakable hate crime.

Zee Zee Theatre Presents My Funny Valentine

Where: The Dance Centre (677 Davie Street, Vancouver)
When: February 7 to 18, 2018
Tickets: Available online now for $27 to $32. 2-for-1 Preview on February 7th at 8:00pm. Contains Coarse Language.

The murder of Lawrence King is widely acknowledged as one of the most prominent gay hate crimes since the 1998 killing of Matthew Shepard. Brandon McInerney was just 14 years old when he shot and killed King in their Oxnard, California junior high school on February 12, 2008. King reportedly asked McInerney to be his Valentine in the days leading up to the incident. King passed away two days later – on Valentine’s Day.

Penned by award-winning Vancouver playwright Dave Deveau, My Funny Valentine was written in the form of several monologues to be heard in the voices of teachers, students, parents, and community members who find themselves caught in the orbit of King’s death. Each one offers poignant and probing reflections on the hate crime, collectively forming a nuanced and diverse tapestry of a community in mourning.

Following its 2011 premiere, My Funny Valentine was honoured with the Sydney Risk Prize for Outstanding Original Script by an Emerging Playwright. Its European debut garnered it a nomination for Ireland’s prestigious Oscar Wilde Award for ‘Best Writing.

This year’s event will feature a handful of special guests that will surely bring out the true baseball fans in each and every one as this event over the years has brought everyone from Marcus Stroman, Aaron Sanchezand and Russell Martinto to Hall of Famers Tim Raines and Roberto Alomar. The 8th annual event will feature a pair of baseball greats that will not disappoint.

Guests include: Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins, President Emeritus Paul Beeston, Former Blue Jays OF Lloyd Moseby.

The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Foundation brings fans together to celebrate their efforts from within their Foundation. Their goal remains to not only to raise funding for their many programs, but also bring awareness to the many local children from their own neighbourhoods that need their commitment and support.

Thanks to the generosity of donors and partners, the Canadians have been able to welcome more than 1,000 children between the ages of 8 and 13 out to historic Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium and provide them with the opportunity to play organized baseball, cost-free which includes their equipment, transportation and meals.

They also see more than 100 local volunteers donate their time to this project allowing children to feel safe, build confidence and learn the game of baseball on the same diamond that the Vancouver Canadians play on each summer.
