The 45th annual Vancouver Chinese New year Parade is a free celebration for all to ring in the Year of the Dog. This signature event features lion dances, cultural dance troupes, marching bands, martial arts performances and much more.

Where: Vancouver’s Chinatown (starting at Millennium Gate on Pender St)
When: Sunday, February 18, 2018 at 11:00am

Chinese New Year Parade 2016

As one of the three largest non-commercial annual parades in Vancouver, the parade features the largest assembly of traditional lion dance teams in Canada with dozens of colourful and energetic lions from various local fraternal and martial arts organizations.

The parade will feature 70 entries, bringing over 3,000 participants from various community and cultural groups. The multicultural dance troupes represent the diverse segments of our Canadian cultural heritage such as the Vancouver Police Department Motorcycle Drill Team, marching bands and various community groups. It is not surprising that the parade draws over 100,000 spectators along the route each year plus many more that will see it through TV coverage.

The 1.3-km long route starts at the Millennium Gate on Pender Street (between Shanghai Alley and Taylor Street), proceeds east along Pender Street, turns south onto Gore Street, turns west onto Keefer Street and then disperses on Keefer at Abbott.

The City of Vancouver owned Vancouver Civic Theatres will partner with the Vancouver Maritime Museum for a free family day event to coincide with the presentation of Into the Arctic, an art and film exhibition that takes viewers to the water’s edge of the icy Canadian North.

Where: Queen Elizabeth Theatre Lobby (650 Hamilton St, Vancouver)
When: Monday February 12, 2018 11:00am to 2:00pm, drop-in

Free Family Day Event to Celebrate the Canadian Arctic

The afternoon will include guided gallery tours by Vancouver Maritime Museum and the Parks Canada arctic outreach team, educating the attendees about the arctic’s unique ecosystems and geography.

There will be two craft stations so the entire family can roll up their sleeves and get creative. Finally, parents and children alike can sit back, relax and enjoy a cup of free hot chocolate while listening to arctic inspired live music.

Artist Cory Trépanier traveled, hiked, explored, and painted the arctic over a 10 year span. The result is a series of more than 50 powerful paintings capturing the most remote and wild corners of the Canadian North. This January, Into the Arctic will be displayed as a shared exhibition between the Vancouver Maritime Museum and at the Vancouver Civic Theatre’s operated Queen Elizabeth Theatre, where a gallery space has been created in its grand, 3-storied lobby.

Into the Arctic will be on display at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre until March 25th, and will be viewable during scheduled, ticketed events.
