birthday party on Saturday.

The Festival gets nostalgic and will be turning back time to dance the night away to hits from the 80s, 90s and 2000s, and enjoy performances inspired by each decade from talented local artists Maiden China, Shay Dior, and Indigenous burlesque troupe Virago Nation.

“The value of queer film as a transformational art medium is just as critical today as it was 30 years ago,” says Executive Director Stephanie Goodwin.

“The Festival is a place for the LGBT2Q+ community to call home as well as an important platform for films that queer the narrative, that illuminate and celebrate LGBT2Q+ lives in all their dimensions and complexity.”

Save the Date!

Mark your calendars for the 30th annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival (“VQFF”) this summer from Thursday, August 9th to Sunday, August 19th. Welcoming its 30th anniversary presenting sponsor, RBC, this year’s Festival will take place at various theatres, including the Vancouver Playhouse, Cineplex Odeon International Village, SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, VIFF Vancity Theatre, and the York Theatre.

Celebrating the best in independent queer cinema, the Vancouver Queer Film Festival is Vancouver’s second largest film festival and the largest queer arts event in Western Canada. More than just film, the Festival also hosts performances, workshops, panel discussions, parties and more, creating a unique community space for eleven days each August. This year’s Festival will feature four film spotlights: Youth, Trans Women in Film, Indigenous Cinema, and a Spotlight on the Artist.

VQFF 2018 opens at the Vancouver Playhouse with the Canadian premiere of Yen Tan’s 1985, a critically-observed period piece brought to life by an acclaimed cast including Cory Michael Smith, Michael Chiklis, Virginia Madsen, and Jamie Chung.

The Festival’s Centrepiece Gala Film is the dramatic comedy White Rabbit co-written by and starring comedian Vivian Bang, who takes us on the often awkward and hilarious journey of a queer Korean American performance artist struggling to be heard and seen in modern Los Angeles.

Plan a family getaway to ancient Egypt… in Victoria! Hop a ferry or floatplane this summer and visit Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs, the latest exhibition at the Royal BC Museum.

Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs at the Royal BC Museum

  • Where: Royal BC Museum (675 Belleville St, Victoria)
  • When: On now until December 31, 2018
    Summer Hours (May 18 – October 6, 2018)
Sunday to Thursday 10:00am to 5:00pm
    Friday & Saturday 10:00am to 10:00pm

Drawn from the collections of some of the world’s most prestigious museums, the exhibition makes its North American debut in Victoria and will be on view until December 31, 2018. Artifacts have been carefully selected from four key ancient Egyptian collections: the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum in Hildesheim, Gustav Lübcke Museum in Hamm and University Museum of Aberdeen.

“Much of what we know and see of ancient Egypt we owe to the vision and work of generations of archaeologists from all over the world,” said Royal BC Museum CEO Prof. Jack Lohman. “Their efforts contribute to our knowledge of a civilization that marks the dawn of the human spirit.”

Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs starts with the Nile, whose fertile beds allowed the civilization to grow and flourish, before delving into the complex religion and death rituals. The exhibition showcases the most impressive and intriguing Pharaohs, along with information about the scribes and writing that enabled their empires.

This depiction of an immensely conservative society, riven by tensions between the royal society and the periphery, is illustrated with more than 300 original artifacts. A 12th dynasty wooden tomb with rare illustrations and texts, on loan from University Museum of Aberdeen will impress Egyptologists and amateur enthusiasts alike. Another highlight is a sculpture of the head of Hatshepsut, a female Pharaoh, from her temple complex at Deir El Bahari.

Families will enjoy this interactive exhibition with lots to touch, play with and learn. Kids will be able to check out scale-model replicas of famous pyramid complexes, play games and experience cutting-edge multimedia.

Foodie Fun in Summerland

Comments 1 by Rebecca Bollwitt

City foodies might be used to a four-top with photo-ready lighting and Instagram accounts set to fire off stories and pics of the latest, hippest culinary trend. However I invite everyone to walk the orchards, stroll the vines, and sample the sweet flavours of the Okanagan in Summerland, BC.

Foodie Fun in Summerland

On assignment for ZenSeekers, wherein I ate my fair share of candies and generously stacked ice cream cones, I discovered that beyond the orchards and vines, there was a longstanding tradition of local, organic, and downright delicious baking and cooking. Continue reading this post ⟩⟩
