Dumb Instrument Dance Presents Public and Private: Win Tickets

Comments 8 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Dumb Instrument Dance presents a new ensemble work, Public and Private, choreographed by acclaimed Vancouver dance artist Ziyian Kwan. In this full-length piece, Kwan is joined by a team of renegade collaborators who each imbue the work with poetry and verve.

Dumb Instrument Dance Presents Public and Private

When: November 13 to 24, 2018 at 8:00pm
Where: Left of Main (211 Keefer Street)
Tickets: From $25, available now online or by calling (604) 862-2912

Dumb Instrument Dance Presents Public and Private

Dancing to the metered urgency of live Taiko, a tribe of female bodied artists delves into physical relationships that express vulnerability and strength. In ways both elegant and raw, Public and Private is a decidedly feminist inquiry.

Scenes of intimacy and play are emboldened by Kwan’s penchant for sourcing what is deeply personal or imagined to question what is real. The performers travel within and in so doing, make selectively public, what was previously private. Treasures are revealed and transposed into sound, language and movement.

In Kwan’s own words, her inspiration for Public and Private: “To move forward is predictable. I want to move sideways, upside down, to slide backwards into things that don’t yet exist. I invite a team of remarkable artists into this work, so that we can mine our autonomy and in so doing, invent a microcosm of community”.

That Ferris Wheel at Robson Square did much more than draw a crowd on Friday, it signalled the wrap up of Variety Week on Global BC. The final numbers are in and thanks to your donations, from all across BC, Variety – the Children’s Charity raised a total of $765,594 to help BC kids with special needs.

Miss604 is a proud sponsor of Variety Week, and I’m so honoured to be a part of this wonderful event and organization. The dedicated volunteers, the sponsors, Variety staff, the Global BC personalities who took the time to engage with the community, and of course all those who donated — THANK YOU!

Variety Week on Robson

“Our average individual grant for a child is $2,500 so this means we’ve raised enough money to help 306 kids and their families. Truly, truly amazing,” said Cally Wesson, Variety BC CEO.

Variety Week on Robson

“With all the challenges facing people in BC, we’re so honoured that the people of this province came forward once again to help our kids with special needs,” said Kenton Boston, VP News and Information, Corus Entertainment, Western Canada. “It’s the smallest things to the biggest things that make a difference in their lives and we’re so proud. Proud and grateful. Thank you British Columbia.”

Throughout the week’s newscasts, Global BC viewers were introduced to children and families supported by Variety and saw firsthand how their lives have changed as a result.

Variety’s core grant areas range from mobility programs and life-saving medical equipment to specialized therapies, mental wellness and educational programs and bursaries for learning disabilities. With Variety Week marking the official kick-off to the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon, Variety is hoping that viewers will set up their own fundraising page online and connect with friends, families and colleagues in support of children with special needs and their families province-wide.

Those who missed out on making a donation during the week can still do so online or by texting “KIDS” to 45678 to make an automatic $20 contribution.
