The city’s own beloved soul queen Dawn Pemberton is turning 40 and to celebrate she’s inviting all to help her tear it up at The Great Get Down, a night in support of WISH Drop-in Centre Society on May 4th.
Dawn Pemberton’s Birthday Show: The Great Get Down
When: Saturday, May 4, 2019 Where: The Imperial – 319 Main Street Tickets: From $40 to $50, available online
To mark this special milestone, Pemberton has enlisted super-slick funk band Soulstream to lead the festivities and Canadian beat-maker DJ Slade to keep party-goers grooving into the evening. Guests will also be treated to the sound of Pemberton’s fierce vocals as the vivacious songstress takes the mic for a few special numbers.
A staple of the Vancouver music scene, who recently toured with The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer, Pemberton enjoys an avid following and casts a wide circle of musical friends and collaborators as a vocalist, teacher, facilitator, choir director and “go to girl” for live shows and studio sessions. A regular on the stage of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and Vancouver Folk Music Fest, her 2014 album Say Somethin’ won the 2015 Western Canadian Music Award for Urban Recording of The Year. Pemberton has collaborated with everyone from Randy Bachman, Matt Anderson, to Ndidi Onukwulu, Kurt Elling and opened for Maceo Parker, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Lee Fields, Cowboy Junkies to name a few.
Making it a birthday bash to remember, Pemberton is not only hosting the ultimate dance party, she is also giving back to some of the city’s most vulnerable. A percentage of all tickets proceeds for The Great Get Down will go to supporting WISH Drop-in Centre Society.
WISH works to improve the health, safety and well-being of women who are involved in Vancouver’s street-based sex trade.
