Big Sisters Spring Lunch 2019

Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland (“Big Sisters BCLM”) is celebrating the power of mentorship at their annual Spring Lunch fundraiser presented by Scotiabank. Held on Friday, June 7th at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, the event helps raise necessary funding for the Big Sisters mentoring programs.

Big Sisters Spring Lunch 2019

It’s a tough world for kids.  1 in 10 children in the Lower Mainland don’t feel that they have an adult in their lives they can count on. “Mentorship is a proven and long lasting solution,” said Hanne Madsen, Executive Director for Big Sisters BCLM. “Research shows that adults who had a mentor as a child are two times less likely to be depressed and three times less likely to have social anxiety. Plus, children who have a positive mentor are less likely to engage in destructive behaviour such as bullying, fighting, binge drinking, drug use, and dropping out of school.”

Big Sisters mentoring programs reached 767 girls in the Lower Mainland last year.

This year, the Big Sisters BCLM Spring Lunch keynote address will be delivered by Susannah Pierce, External Relations Director of LNG Canada.  Susannah will discuss the important role mentorship has played in her professional and personal life.

Join over 200 business and community leaders on June 7th from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Fairmont Pacific Rim and help vulnerable youth in the Lower Mainland reach their full potential. Tickets are still available here »

10 Things You Have to Experience at the BC Highland Games

Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

The BC Highland Games and Scottish Festival is coming up on June 14th (free night) and June 15th (full day, ticketed festival) at Lafarge Lake in Town Centre Park in Coquitlam. I asked the organizers what to expect at this two-day fest of highland fun and they sent me the following list, which you won’t see at any other festival in Metro Vancouver this summer!

10 Things You Have to Experience at the BC Highland Games

  1. Try on a kilt
  2. Lift a caber
  3. Hunt for Haggis
  4. Eat haggis (of course!)
  5. Buy some tartan
  6. Join the massed Scottish Country Dancers
  7. Learn some Scottish Gaelic
  8. Sip some whisky
  9. Learn a Highland dance step
  10. Listen to the massed pipe bands

The BC Highland Games is a competition, to determine the best musician, dancer, athlete or band.  It’s “BC’s Got Talent” on the pipes, in dance, in caber tossing and camaraderie. The bagpipe, highland dance and heavy event competitions are among the most demanding pursuits in the world. And in this tough world, winning is the goal. Surrounding this competitive core is a festival only the Scots can put on, welcoming everyone, from Bhangra dancers to performance pipe band! Don’t miss out on this fun weekend filled with activities for the whole family.

Follow the BC Highland Games on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram for more information about this festival and its amazing tradition.
