The 39th annual Terry Fox Run is coming up on September 15, 2019 in communities across Canada – and the world. Everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of age, athletic ability or socio-economic standing. While the Run does not have an entry fee or minimum donation the Terry Fox Foundation does ask that all participants fundraise or make a donation.  

You can raise funds online, use a pledge sheet or make a donation at the Run site. Whatever your choice, please know that every dollar counts!

Miscellaneous Productions, Vancouver’s hip hop theatre boot camp for youth from the community, is proud to present their 2018/2019 new work, AWAY with HOME, September 27-28, 2019 at the Scotiabank Dance Centre. MISCELLANEOUS presents an original theatrical work to the public every two years, and tours internationally, giving free peer-run workshops for at-risk youth, and making films about their performances.

What do home, identity, and belonging mean to you? With those three questions in mind, director Elaine Carol began rehearsals of AWAY with HOME, working with youth who drew from their own personal experiences, and together have created an entirely new work that explores issues of immigration, racism, mental health, bullying, maturation, family, victimization, identity and belonging.

AWAY with HOME is a transdisciplinary performance work that features five youth from the community ranging in age from 14-21. It combines contemporary and hip hop dance, neo-soul and hip hop music, Taiko drumming, image theatre, performance art and performance poetry together to examine the thematic questions.

Inlet Theatre Open House & Relief Printmaking Session

Details: Have you ever wondered what’s going on behind-the-scenes of a theatre? Stop by for a full hands-on experience and learn about the inner workings of Inlet Theatre’s lighting, sound and video systems. Guided tours on the hour.  Join, Sara Graham, Port Moody’s Resident Artist, as she leads participants in the art of relief printmaking.  You will get to choose from a selection of pre-designed Port Moody cityscapes.  And the best part… you get to take your print home with you!  Children young and old will get the opportunity to construct a building to add to our “Build a City” Lego station.

Voices of our City Poetry Tree

Details: Celebrate our city and the power of poetry with an installation at the Port Moody Public Library inspired by Shel Silverstein’s “The Poet Tree”.  Take a poem, share a poem, and write your own to be added to the cityscape. Add your voice to the project by composing and posting your own haiku, couplet, limerick, free verse or ode. Express your creativity and let your voice and words build our city.

Details: This workshop will provide participants with an overview of rock balancing, including what rock balancing is, safety and respectful practices, and hands on practice focusing on 3 different styles of rock balancing. The goal of the workshop is to have the participants reconnect with nature while having fun and being creative.

Details: Blackberry Gift Shop represents local artisans from the lower mainland of Vancouver-area. We have woodworkers, jewelers, textile artists, 3-dimensional craftsmen, along with painters, glass makers and ceramists. Each piece is unique exhibiting creative workmanship.

Art 4 Life Opening Reception

Details: The Art 4 Life exhibition is filled with art, activities, and events geared to the young and the young at heart.  The goal is to cultivate artistic growth in our community by inspiring and engaging children, as well as raising opportunities for active participation, discussion, cultural awareness and lessons on art appreciation.  The benefits of an arts education affect every area of life and we want it to be a lifelong journey.  At the opening reception, there will be free art activities designed to inspire and engage both the young and young at heart, as well as the chance to view the new exhibit.

Venosta Radio Show
Presented by the Port Moody Heritage Society & Performance Expect Exceptional Theatre

Details: Join us as we take you back to the days before television when families would gather around the radio to be entertained by stories, ads, and music. Enjoy a free behind-the-scenes look at how a 1920’s radio show was executed.  Misty P Moody, Captain Bobbing Buoy, and Mrs. Boniface and her school children save Port Moody from the Martians. Children in the audience will be invited up on stage at the end of the play to act as Martians.

It’s called Poutine With Purpose because during the event, for every poutine sold in any of the participating restaurants, a simple, healthy meal is provided to a youth in need through Mealshare charity partners.

Chefs are challenged to dream up and dish up a feature poutine for the week — from the traditional, to the creative, to the unusual. Calgary and Victoria Poutine With Purpose events have sold over 30,000 poutines since 2015.

3. A youth in need provided a meal through Mealshare partners

You can try Edible Canada’s Famous Duck Poutine on Granville Island; Wok Box’s Butter Chicken Poutine in New West, Surrey or Abbotsford; Tatertot Breakfast Poutine from BLVD Bistro in North Van; Southern Fried Chicken Poutine from Colony and much more.

Mealshare partners with restaurants across North America through a simple ‘buy one, give one‘ model that provides simple, healthy meals to youth in need. When a guest orders Mealshare menu item at a partner restaurant, they will get their meal just like normal, but now one meal will also be provided through partner charities and organizations.

It’s been a Vancouver tradition for over 30 years and it’s back again for another season. Oktoberfest at the Alpen Club takes place over three weekends with dancing, music games, schnitzel, sauerkraut, and of course pints of Krombacher and Erdinger.
