The City of Vancouver, in partnership with Creative BC, has announced that it will be providing $300,000 in funding to support 57 music projects through the second round of the Vancouver Music Fund.

“We are thrilled to work with Creative BC to amplify the voices of Indigenous and underrepresented musicians and support the next generation of Vancouver artists and organizations that are shaping our city’s remarkable music scene,” said Jarrett Martineau, Music Officer for the City of Vancouver. “Local music plays a vital role in our local economy and in creating a diverse, healthy city and creative sector, and we’re proud to invest in opportunities that increase equity for communities that continue to experience barriers to access and funding.”
Funded projects include Tahltan/Tlingit, Two-Spirit artist Edzi’u and producer Lin Gardiner who will collaborate on a demo recording; The Black Lab Artist Society’s “100 Block Rock 2” compilation album featuring music from DTES residents; and Music Waste, an annual independent, non-profit music and art festival.
“As an Independent artist, I have always had to work within the scope of my means and certain limitations,” says emcee and songwriter Kapok who, along with filmmaker Rana Sowdaey, received $10,000 to film a music video for Kapok’s track There You Go Again. “Through the Vancouver Music Fund, I will be able to see what happens when these limitations are dissolved, and I am free to be creative well outside of my bounds.”

The Burrard Arts Foundation (“BAF”) has announced Together Again, an exhibition and auction in support of BAF alumni artists who have participated in BAF’s programming since its inception in 2013. The art, which is currently on display at BAF, will be auctioned between August 10-24, 2021 in partnership with Heffel Fine Art Auction House.

While it’s common for arts organizations to host fundraising auctions for their own benefit, the primary purpose of Together Again is to support the participating artists themselves.
This means that the vast majority of the hammer price will be returned to the artist – a unique and valuable opportunity in a city where the space, time, and financial resources needed to create art can be scarce. Artists need all the support possible, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Aptly named, Together Again evokes the sensation of revisiting community and connection after a long and trying period of separation,” said Christian Chan, Founder and Director of the Burrard Arts Foundation, “Not only does the exhibition bring together our talented alumni, but it has also allowed us to partner with another arts organization to give back to our community.”
The exhibition features 37 artworks by 24 of the many exceptional artists who have been part of BAF’s exhibitions and programming over the past seven years.

Electric Company Theatre, Innovation Lighting, and Presentation House Theatre present The Magic Hour, August 3 to 22, 2021 in North Vancouver. The immersive, walk-through, theatrical experience is a light-charged story of finding beauty in small moments and possibility within domestic isolation.

The Magic Hour is an immersive, walk-through, theatrical experience; a light-charged story of finding beauty in small moments and possibility within domestic isolation.
Created and conceived by award-winning theatre director Kim Collier with playwright Kendra Fanconi, the individual experience invites you to embark on a solo room-by-room exploration of familiar, yet-transformed spaces at Presentation House Theatre. The destination of this curious and magical journey is a reflection on an unprecedented year – and a step forward into a brave new world.
Guided through scenes by rich audio, video, lighting and stagecraft, and created in collaboration with Vancouver’s Innovation Lighting and Presentation House Theatre, Kim describes the piece as “A lovesong for the possibility of change in even the most static of situations”.
The Magic Hour explores the routes of the imagination; the physical world meets the digital world, blending art, design, music and text in a multi-layer mixed-media feast for the senses.

While the show is specifically designed for an individual audience member, a tandem experience can be booked within your household bubble but may impact certain elements of the installation experience.

Music on Main invites a live audience to The Kessler Academy 2021 at the Vancouver Playhouse on August 14th. This innovative, youth-focused training academy features an entirely musician-led string orchestra mentorship program, driven by the Vancouver-based Microcosmos Quartet.

This intergenerational collaboration, named for Vancouver’s beloved centenarian and philanthropist Mrs. Susan Kessler, is dedicated to keeping classical music vibrant and vital in the 21st century. In a week-long August mentorship, Vancouver-based Microcosmos Quartet will work with skilled youth in mastering great classical 20th and 21st century pieces and will present their final work in a showcase event.
Listen closely to famous works by Béla Bartók, Igor Stravinsky, and Paul Hindemith that resonate with the current unstable times, as all the pieces come from a past of uncertainty.
“This year we explore the work of three important 20th century composers whose lives were deeply affected by cataclysmic social upheavals,” says Marc Destrubé, violin, as he describes this year’s repertoire focus. “Bartok and Stravinsky were both afflicted with the Spanish Flu immediately following the First World War, and all three composers sought refuge in America during the course of the Second World War. In addition to our rehearsals we will hold discussions around the role and lives musicians around such events in the past, and how the current pandemic might influence musical life in the near future.”
The chance to listen together in the same space brings so much excitement and optimism for brighter days ahead. On August 14, music lovers can share musical experiences that bring the music to life and cultivate a sense of togetherness and warmth.
