The old Hastings Mill store was one of the only buildings in Vancouver at the time to survive the Great Fire of 1886 and it now resides near Jericho Beach in Kitsilano.
The store carried the staples of the day when it opened in the 1860s; tabacco, pipes, overalls, men’s suits, vests and flannel underwear 1. In the 1920s the old mill was slated for demolition however the Native Daughters of British Columbia, Post No. 1 wanted to save the store. They campaigned to raise $10,000 to keep the store and were successful. Thanks to their efforts, Hastings Mill Store is a museum for us all to explore today.

On July 29, 1930 the store was moved from Dunlevy Street by barge across the water to where it sits today, in what is now Hastings Mill Park (or Pioneer Park). The store, now a museum, spent 60 years in its old location on Dunlevy as Vancouver was built up around it.

Edward Stamp (as in Stamp’s Landing) was a sawmill operator. In 1865, he opened BC and Vancouver Island Spar, Lumber and Sawmill (known as Hastings Mill) on Burrard Inlet, destined to be the city’s largest industrial complex.2
Richard Henry Alexander was a Hastings Mill storekeeper who worked also as a mill accountant and later manager in 1870. On the death of Captain James Raymur in the last 1880s, he took over the store.3
The Hastings Mill Museum is located at 1575 Alma Road (at Point Grey Road). Hours (according to FindFamilyFun) are June 15 to September 15: Tuesday to Sunday 11:00am – 4:00pm; September 16 to June 14: Saturday and Sunday only, 1:00pm – 4:00pm.

Taking place at the Logger Sports Grounds and Hendrickson Fields September 4th and 5th, artists seem to be added to the bill every few days as the impressive entertainment lineup grows.

It’s an all-ages show (and children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult) however some area (such as the VIP) are 19+ only. Tickets go on sale this Friday June 25th but if you have access to ClubZone, Georgia Straight, or The Peak VIP mailing lists you may have received a pre-sale promotion code.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts has been shortlisted for the 2010 World Mayor Prize. This is an international designation that honours mayors with the vision, passion and skills required to make their cities incredible places to live in, work in and visit. Additionally, it aims to show what outstanding mayors can achieve and raise their profiles nationally and internationally.
Mayor Watts is one of only four North America mayors to make the cut. There are two finalists from Canada and two more from the United States; Mayor David Broconnier (Calgary), Mayor Cory Booker (Newark), and Mayor Mick Cornett (Oklahoma City). All those shortlisted will be asked to sign the code of ethics.
At this point in the process it is now up to the public to help select the finalists. Head to the World Mayor website to cast your vote for your favourite mayor.
Mayor Watts has has an impressive career in local politics. She was elected Mayor of Surrey in 2005, has served on the board of the GVRD, has done as term as Chair of the Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation, has seen Surrey through growth and expansion through development of a ‘City Centre’, as well as being a venue and celebration site for the 2010 Olympics. Having been born and raised in Surrey, I have an interest in seeing my hometown thrive under great leadership.

The Prize is handed out by City Mayors about every two years, with the most recent recipient being Helen Zille, Executive Mayor of Cape Town (2008).

There will be the “100 Years of Fun Parade” once daily including a cast of 50 performers and 12 giant balloons (think Macy’s Thanksgiving Day paradae). There’s also the Kaboom! fireworks show nightly, and performances from the Metro Vancouver Naval 2010 Centennial Tattoo, the U.S. Marine Corps Band, the Seaforth Highlanders and the Vancouver Police Pipe Band.
Everyone’s favourites will also be back again this year as well — the Superdogs, Logger Sports, and the legendary Dal Richards with his orchestra.
This landmark season of the PNE will run Saturday, August 21 to Sunday, September 6, 2010.
