The Vancouver Canucks start their second round of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs tonight against Nashville and after a heated battle with Chicago, the team and the fans are certainly fired up.
After a few suggestions on Twitter that I find a blogging counterpart in Nashville, I contacted Nashville Scene – a source for all things Nashville with news, reviews, food, and of course, music. A few quick emails later and we have a blogger battle.
Nashville Scene – Nashville Declares War on Vancouver, Sort of:
“This politely worded Canadian aggression will not stand. Yes, Miss 604, we accept your “friendly challenge.” The terms, agreed upon by our dueling partner in the godforsaken frozen North — OK, the lushly green, conifer-scented, beautifully landscaped North — are as follows: The blog from the winning team’s city will receive a hotly coveted, generously apportioned, lavishly assembled (yet small enough to sneak through Customs) package of goods from the losing city’s hometown.”
The Mayors of Vancouver and Nashville have a similar challenge, that was announced today as well: “If Vancouver wins best out of seven games, Mayor Dean will help Vancouver celebrate by sending a country ham and CDs representing the broad spectrum of Nashville’s music scene to Mayor Robertson. If Nashville wins, Mayor Robertson has promised to send a Fraser River Sockeye Salmon along with a CD of Vancouver’s musicians.”
Nashville Scene and I will be putting together prize packages featuring the best out cities have to offer (and whatever can fit in a shipping box). The winner will keep their prize pack and be shipped the prize put together by the losing city. So technically when the Canucks defeat the Predators I will be receiving a prize package from Nashville that I will be happily sharing with you all. It’s pretty much a win-win situation, except for when it comes to the action on the ice. So, before the puck drops tonight at Rogers Arena, I would like to call upon my readers for suggestions.
What should I include in a super Vancouver prize package? Some Raincoast Crisps? Mink Chocolates? Smoked Salmon? An autographed 8×10 glossy of Fin? A “Bike Lanes Make Me Hornby” t-shirt?

Update May 9, 2011: The Canucks have defeated Nashville so I’m going to roll over the Vancouver prize pack to the next series. In the event that I do not need to send the package to the opposing team’s city, it will all be donated to KidSport.
Wheel to Heal is coming up in May as locals ride their bikes to raise funds for Eagle Ridge Hospital in the Tri-Cities area. Participants are challenged to fundraise (by way of a personal campaign website) for the event which will consist of riding a 10km, 40km, or 80km course throughout Port Moody, Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam.
The event is coming up May 15th but there is still time to register (until May 12th) or sign up to volunteer. Entry fees start at $0 (children 8 and under) and go up to $35 for adults. Prizes will be awarded for the top fundraisers in each age category.
Eagle Ridge Hospital sees 100,000 patient visits annually and every year over 40,000 patients visit the Emergency Room. Apart from the busy ER, there are 6 full time operating rooms, outreach programs (from Diabetes to IV therapy) and patient recovery stories that would warm your heart from those who have suffered severe car accidents to strokes in the new High Intensity Rehabilitation program.

The nominees for the YWCA’s Women of Distinction Awards have been announced and the winners will be awarded at a banquet ceremony Tuesday, May 31st at the Westin Bayshore.
Inspiring women from around the region have been nominated in for their work in Arts, Culture & Design, Business & the Professions, Community Building, Education, Training & Development, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Health & Active Living, Non-Profit & Public Service, Technology, Science & Industry, and as a Young Woman of Distinction, or for creating an Innovative Workplace. From a playwright, artists, CEOs, nurses, Executive Directors and volunteers, to educators and students. A full list of nominees is available online.
While the award winners are determined by the YWCA’s committee, the Connecting the Community Award relies on a public vote. All nominees are listed in an online poll and they need your help to get votes until the poll closes May 27th.
You can also purchase your tickets for the banquet at an early bird rate of $170 before May 6, 2011. Included with your ticket is a full dinner at the Westin, drinks, and a tax receipt for a portion of your ticket price. This event supports the non-profit programs of the YWCA in Vancouver.

April 29th is International Dance Day as initiated by UNESCO back in 1982, the date commemorating the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), regarded as the founder of modern ballet. This year Vancouver’s Dance Centre is celebrating with a series of public performances and events around the downtown core.
The theme this year is diversity in dance, of which Vancouver has plenty. Swing champions Tessa Cunningham and Myles Munroe will be “swing bombing” sites around Vancouver. Starting with the intersection of Robson and Burrard at 12:05pm on Friday. They’ll move onto the Vancouver Art Gallery (Georgia St side) at 12:25pm, then will head to the Vancouver Public Library (Robson at Homer) at 1:00pm.
Festivities will continue at the library until 2:00pm with free performances by Mandala Arts and Culture (classical East Indian dance), Urban Tap Squad and Friends, and Karen Flamenco. A full schedule of events, including evening performances, is available from the Scotiabank Dance Centre.
