When I was invited to the gallery for a behind the scenes tour a few years ago I discovered that a third of their collection sits in their underground vault since there is such limited exhibition space. Many of these unhung pieces include the work of Canadian artist and writer Emily Carr, who was inspired by the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Being able to see more of her work on display at the gallery, for a discounted price this month, makes this “must see” attraction.
The Emily Carr: Deep in Forest exhibition will be open through March, 2014. Follow the Vancouver Art Gallery on Facebook and Twitter for more information.

Aside from our athletes giving it their all in competition, the most exciting part of the Vancouver 2010 Games for me was exploring the various pavilions, houses, and entertainment zones that popped up around the city. From February 14th to February 16th, 2014, you can relive that excitement with the 2nd annual Under the Bridge Festival that will include events and festivities at Edible Canada House.
Inspired by the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, this year’s festival, Edible Canada House, is expected to be the biggest Olympic party in Vancouver. For those wanting to relive the glory of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, this is your chance.
Tucked underneath the Granville Street Bridge in the heart of Granville Island, this Canadian-themed winter festival is once again part of CMHC’s famous Winterruption Festival, running February 14–16. Along with live music (including both DJs and bands), Edible Canada House will showcase a number of live and pre-recorded Olympic events provided by event sponsor, Preston Mobility. Three giant projection screens will allow guests to party the night away while cheering on the nation’s top athletes. In true Edible Canada fashion, the theme will be quintessential Canadian.
Savoury Chef will be hosting multiple food stations showcasing classic Canadian fare such as bison chili, Alberta beef brisket & maple flapjacks to name a few — perfect late night snacks! There will also be other comfort food items provided by Edible Canada, such as cheesy perogies. Granville Island Brewing will be supplying the craft beer and many other local wines and spirits will be flowing over the course of the weekend, including Edible’s famous “Garnish Your Own” Caesar bar.
Edible Canada House will run the entire weekend of February 14-16 and into early mornings. Families with young ones are also warmly welcomed, as there will also be a separate play area with face painting courtesy of Granville Island Toy Company.
Tickets are available online and general admission includes:
- Two Drink Tickets (beer, wine, Caesar, or non-alcoholic beverage)
- One Food Station Ticket
- Unlimited Televised Winter Olympic Events (view schedule)
- Local live bands & DJs
- Entertainment for kids, including a play area and face painting
Edible Canada House will be open Friday, February 14 from 6:00pm to 1:00am; Saturday, February 15 from 11:00am to 1:00am; and Sunday, February 16 from 11:00am to Midnight.

It’s been years since I attended any Dine Out Vancouver events, so when Rebecca asked me to check a few out this year, I gladly took it as an opportunity to dine one of Vancouver’s finest restaurants: Market by Jean-Georges at the Shangri-La Hotel.
In addition to offering their usual $38 prix fixe menu, this year they introduced, “Film Feast: Jiro Dreams of Sushi.” The event, which completely sold out on all the nights it was offered, included an exclusive screening of the critically-acclaimed documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi (which follows the now 88-year-old sushi master chef and owner of Sukiyabashi Jiro, the first sushi restaurant ever to be awarded three Michelin stars), followed by a special 4-course dinner inspired by the film.
Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the event, but I was lucky enough to taste the restaurant’s $38 prix fixe menu, which was delightful. In the past, I found some of the Dine Out dinners a little disappointing — maybe it’s because the restaurants cook a selected few items en masse and perhaps there is a loss in quality in such a process. However, my dinner at Market — prepared by Chef Montgomery Lau — was top notch.
Though I found my first course, seared gulf shrimp with butternut squash, slightly overcooked, the steelhead was probably the most perfectly cooked piece of fish I’ve ever had, and the truffled mashed potatoes it sat upon added great depth of flavour.
For dessert, the buttermilk panna cotta was both light and creamy and the cassis poached pear with pear sorbet added just the right amount of sweetness to the end of my first Dine Out dinner in a long time, convincing me that I should definitely attend more events next year.
