If you have noticed a winter wonderland at Coquitlam Centre lately it’s because the internet’s favourite surly feline is there to film a Christmas movie, Grumpy Cat’s Worth Christmas Ever.
Grumpy Cat (real name, Tardar Sauce) rose to internet fame after a series of photos of her signature frown and furrowed brow were posted on Reddit, and videos were posted to YouTube. She became the poster cat for grumpy statements and being an all-round party pooper, becoming a meme sensation online.
Her appeal has translated to a global audience both on and offline, landing her a deal with Friskies – and you can even find plush Grumpy Cat toys available in stores. Grumpy Cat is also known for making special appearances for photo ops at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas.
Coquitlam Centre wants to encourage shoppers to drop by and is offering a souvenir Grumpy Cat button during this time to let fans know the shopping centre is “fit for a feline”, even Grumpy Cat. Tweet @CoquitlamCentre or visit Coquitlam Centre at 2929 Barnet Hwy to find out more and to pick up your button. Buttons will be available while supplies last. Filming takes place over 16 days in August/September.

Vancouver is an ever-changing city, with new construction cranes popping every day, scaffolding being dismantled, new pits being excavated, and demolitions scheduled. Our city’s skyline, downtown streets and landscape seems to change dramatically every few years, which is why I believe we’re all pretty obsessed with “Then and Now” images. There are many resources for these “Before and After” images, like the wonderfully in-depth Changing Vancouver, and other blog features like I have done since 2009. Now there are two recent project that have been kicking it up a notch, providing a fascinating batch of comparisons.
Langara Students Merging Time
According to the Langara College program: “The Merging Time assignment is one of the cornerstones of the PHOT 1248 course in the first year of Professional Photo-Imaging. Having chosen a historical image from the City of Vancouver Archives collection, the Professional Photo-Imaging students returned to the original location to capture a new image in our current time.” Langara then posts the results on their Flickr account:

Scout Magazine Does Fred Herzog
Fred Herzog is a legendary photographer who mastered street photography and gave us an archive of colourful images that give us a glimpse of everyday Vancouver. Scout Magazine‘s Andrew Morrison decided to walk around with his copy of Fred Herzog Photographs (Douglas & McIntyre, 2011) and along with his son, he tried to shoot the exact locations depicted in Herzog’s work from the 1950s and 1960s.
Morrison writes: “Because of our familiarity with the territory, most of the locations have been easy to pick out. Others are proving far more difficult because much of what was once there is no more. Truly, working on this has really brought home how dramatic the changes to this city have been over the last 50-60 years. And yet, in some places, it’s uncanny how it has remained largely the same.”

Band-Aid is a way to start an ongoing creative and supportive culture among Surrey’s young bands and musicians. The City of Surrey, through Youth Services and the Surrey Arts Centre, will provide Band-Aid participants with performance opportunities at Surrey Youth Fest.
Enjoy all of the above along with sumo wrestling, water walking, a photobooth, food trucks, DJ Deth Klown, an adrenaline obstacle course, and giveaways.
Free Shuttle
The free shuttle will doing pick ups and drop offs at community centres around Surrey all night long. A full schedule is available online and stops include South Surrey Rec Centre, Newton Rec Centre, Clayton Heights Secondary, Don Christian Rec Centre, Bridgeview Community Centre, Chuck Bailey Rec Centre, North Surrey Rec Centre, Guildford Rec Centre, Fraser Heights Rec Centre, and Fleetwood Community Centre.
