Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

The Rio Theatre is serving up a blend of super hot, sweet, romantic favourites, and a goofy classic for February’s Friday Late Night series. Tickets are available online in advance or at the door for $8 or $6 if you come in costume for the midnight shows. These 19+ screenings can be complimented with a beverage from the theatre’s full service bar as you enjoy a night out with friends.

Friday Late Night Movies at the Rio Theatre

Friday, February 6, 2015
9 1/2 Weeks (Adrian Lyne, 1986) @ 11:55pm
Before there was 50 Shades of Grey, there was 9 1/2 Weeks. Even at the height of their respective careers, Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke were never hotter than they were together, burning up the screen in director Adrian Lyne’s stylish, erotically charged, and very graphic 80s cult classic. A woman gets involved in an impersonal affair with a man. She barely knows about his life, only about the sex games they play, so the relationship begins to get complicated.

Friday, February 13, 2015 Leonardo DiCaprio Double Bill
Titanic (James Cameron, 1997) @8:00pm
James Cameron won all the Oscars for this global phenomenon about a great ship that went down, while stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were launched into the Movie Legend Stratosphere forever. Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Gloria Stuart, Bill Paxton, and Victor Garber also star in one of the biggest big-screen movies of all time, ever. A seventeen-year-old aristocrat, expecting to be married to a rich claimant by her mother, falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.

Romeo + Juliet (Baz Luhrmann, 1996) @ 11:55pm
Australian director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) gives William Shakespeare’s age-old and beloved tale of star-crossed love gone awry a hyper-kinetic, modern redo in this timeless fan favourite. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes give standout performances in a film that features a fantastic ensemble including Paul Sorvino, Harold Perrineau, Pete Posthelwaite, John Leguizamo, Paul Rudd, Brian Dennehy and Miriam Margolyes.

Friday, February 20, 2015
True Romance (Tony Scott, 1993) @ 11:55pm
Director Tony Scott’s ultra-violent (yet ultra-sweet) oddball romance (from a script penned by Quentin Tarantino!) about long-shot couple Clarence and Alabama (Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette) has remained an endearing cult-classic since its release in 1993. Also starring James Gandolfini, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, and more.

Friday, February 27, 2015
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) @ 11:55pm
While Jim Carrey was already an established comic thanks to his amazing work on TV’s In Living Color, it was his role as a goofy pet detective who talks to animals in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective that really propelled him into the mainstream. Also starring Courtney Cox, Sean Young, Tone Loc (!) and Udo Kier (!!) A goofy detective specializing in animals goes in search of a missing dolphin mascot of a football team.

The Rio Theatre is an independent art and movie house located at 1660 West Broadway, at Commercial Drive, and is easily accessible by transit. Follow along on Facebook and Twitter for more film screenings, comedy showcases, and special event information.
