Grouse Grind Opens Months Early

by Rebecca Bollwitt

Metro Vancouver Regional Parks has announced that the Grouse Grind is now open, which is months ahead of schedule. Each year, the popular trail closes for the winter season and for the past few years it has reopened mid-April. With no new snow on the north shore, and zero recorded at YVR in over 365 days, the “early spring” weather in Vancouver is rather unsettling.

Grouse Grind Opens Months Early

“The Grouse Grind Trail has reopened due to favourable weather and trail conditions.” Metro Vancouver posted on Facebook. “Visitors are reminded to come prepared: wear appropriate footwear, dress for seasonal conditions, and carry microspikes as icy sections may be present. Hikers should also bring water and a snack, and allow enough time to complete the hike safely.”

The Grouse Grind Trail is located in North Vancouver, and is a part of Grouse Mountain Regional Park that spans 75 hectares of mature forest and mountain streams. In addition to the Grouse Grind Trail, the park also includes the BCMC Trail and part of the Baden-Powell Trail.

Park hours are 7:00am to 3:00pm (til 3:30pm starting February 6th) and hours are posted until February 19, 2026. The Grind is a very steep trail that starts at 300 metres elevation and climbs to 1,100 metres over a distance of approximately 2.5 kilometres. Be prepared for the conditions and follow all precautions recommended by Metro Vancouver.
