Christmas in Victoria Holiday and Winter Activities
byAs summer’s vibrant blooms fade, the capital region transforms into a magical wonderland of shimmering light installations, proving there’s fun to be had year-round. From late November to early December, the festive spirit kicks off with the Santa Claus Parade, the Royal BC Museum’s WinterFest, and the dazzling Langford Light Up truck parade. But the holiday magic doesn’t end there—here are six must-try activities to enjoy all season long:

Christmas in Victoria Holiday and Winter Activities
Lights of Wonder
On now until December 31st in Centennial Square enjoy this free, all-ages event every day starting at 4:00pm. Experience themed light exhibits, interactive tunnels, and a towering 40-foot Christmas tree. Enjoy live entertainment every Friday and Saturday until December 20th when nightly performances begin (except Christmas Day). Cozy up with warm treats, stroll through photo-worthy displays, and discover holiday surprises, including a Ferris wheel debuting on December 20th and fun on-site activations like a 360° camera, photo booth, Lion Dancers, and a silent disco.
Gingerbread Showcase
The 16th annual Gingerbread Showcase is at the Hotel Grand Pacific, on now through January 5th, 2025. An iconic Victoria holiday tradition, professional and home bakers spend hundreds of hours creating edible art as they vie for six different awards. Their impressive displays attract more than 20,000 visitors and proceeds (your donations) will go to Habitat for Humanity.
Butchart Gardens
During the winter holidays, The Butchart Gardens transforms into a breathtaking spectacle of twinkling lights known as the Magic of Christmas. On now until January 6, visitors will find more than 300,000 lights illuminate the gardens, creating a festive and enchanting atmosphere. Stroll through themed displays, including the Twelve Days of Christmas, while enjoying music from traditional carolers or the festive brass band.
Christmas at the Castle
Would you believe there’s two Christmas at the Castle events near Victoria?
Experience the magic of the holiday season at Craigdarroch Castle with a festive self-guided tour. Throughout December, the castle is beautifully adorned with Christmas decor, offering a unique and enchanting atmosphere. Enjoy special evening musical performances featuring Celtic tunes and holiday classics, making your visit to this historic site even more memorable. Starting on December 11th, Jason Stevens channels the Dickensian spirit within the historic walls of Craigdarroch Castle. Book tickets in advance.
Cozy Up at Hatley Castle on December 21st. Tickets are going fast so book now! The iconic Hatley Castle is open during weekends in December for touring, holiday photos and family fun—this is the only time during the winter season the castle is open to the public. Wear your matching PJs or your best sweater, grab a warm drink and see the Castle dressed up in all the beauty of the season. Warm up or snap a selfie by the roaring main fireplace, tour the museum, and check out the view from the top of the grand staircase, which is not open during summer tours!
Holiday Tea
There are the grand mainstays of Victoria Afternoon Teas but we tried a new-to-us spot on our recent visit and were absolutely delighted. The White Heather Tea Room in Oak Bay offers a limited edition Winter Afternoon Tea, which you can enjoy in their quaint neighbourhood tea room (by reservation), or order to-go.
We visited before the holiday service began but thoroughly enjoyed a delightful Not-So-Wee tea service. It included freshly baked scones served with preserves, cream, and lemon curd (a first for me at an afternoon tea), as well as a selection of tea sandwiches and a mini quiche. There was also a delicious scone-wich, featuring artichoke for the vegetarians at the table. The top tier offered a selection of desserts, such as a red velvet mini cupcake, shortbread, and chocolate mousse. While there was no grand piano playing (which is always a lovely touch), this cozy room featured delightfully friendly and helpful staff, and the food was exceptional. I definitely recommend it!
Bastion Square Holiday Market
Remaining days for the market this season are December 19-24, from 11:00am to 5:00pm both indoors and outdoors at 18 Bastion Square. Each day will feature hand crafted goods from local artisans and makers, live music as well as resellers on Sunday.
There’s also the Festival of Trees at the Bay Centre, and so many lovely places to shop! Some of our favourite spots are Russell Books, the Papery, Fan Tan Home & Style, Oscar & Libby’s, Nezza Naturals, the Regional Assembly of Text, and more!
