I got my bag out from the closet and laid my clothes next to it. Sundress, bathing suit, sandals, floppy hat, sunglasses. I paused for a moment to review my selections, which all reminded me of our last tropical vacation. The fact that I could pack these items, which instantly make me at ease thinking about vacation time, just to go across town to the Westin Bayshore for a lovely getaway made me happy, and pretty excited.

Welcomed in the lobby by Westin’s signature white tea scent on my nose really drove home the “I’m on vacation” vibe. I checked in and headed up to the tower room that John and I would call home for the next two nights.

A lovely welcome gift awaited me: A local craft beer sampler featuring some of my favourites, courtesy of H2 Rotisserie & Bar downstairs – the newest addition to the hotel. I saved the paddle for John and got to work on getting ready for the pool as my H2Oasis experience was waiting.

A resort pool with bar service, sunny chaise lounges, tables for snacks, and plenty of room for swimming and family fun — and the best part is it’s available for locals too! Vancouverites looking to beat the heat in style, along with valued guests, can book an H2Oasis experience. It comes with a reserved chaise lounge, a $25 credit for H2(O)’s pool menu, and refreshing treats throughout the visit.

Within minutes of taking my seat on the plush blue Lacoste towels I was handed a coconut. Vacation mode was fully activated.

The pool is also home to morning yoga sessions on floating aquamats. Stay fit in a unique way, or if you’re up for a run, join a guided run with the Westin’s Run Concierge in the morning. You can even pack super light and borrow some gear from the New Balance Gear Lending Program.

H2 Rotisserie & Bar

After my time at the pool, John arrived from work and joined me for a cocktail and dinner on the patio at H2 Rotisserie & Bar. On the menu you’ll find chicken rotisserie specials, Ocean Wise seafood options, a selection of meal-sized salads, steaks, pasta, and much more. Every night there is live music inside and out, under the trees with twinkling lights. You really do forget that you’re in the middle of a bustling city, and that the Stanley Park Seawall is just steps away on the other side of the lawn by the pool.

The cocktail list is impressive, filled with spirits from distillers across Vancouver and BC. Same goes for the wine list, which always makes me happy to see so many of my favourite BC wine regions represented.

On the second night we dined inside and took our cocktails back up to our room so we could catch the sunset view from our balcony overlooking Coal Harbour, Lost Lagoon, and beyond.

Breakfast featured a large menu, with everything from avocado toast to pancakes and bennies, and the buffet was unreal. Dim sum, congee, omelette station, eggs, bacon, danishes, smoked salmon, you name it! The coffee flowed freely thanks to the attentive staff, mornings were smooth, which is just want you want when you’re on staycation.

Vida Spa

As if I wasn’t already completely blissed out from poolside lounging and patio cocktails, I had an appointment in the Vida Spa. I have to fully disclose that this wasn’t my first time at Vida since John and I have booked a few couples massages here to treat ourselves.

It’s our spa of choice in Downtown Vancouver because it’s close to home, it’s a relaxing setting, and you really do feel like you’re a million miles away – if even for the duration of your 60 minute massage. Not to mention the staff is amazing and we usually come out of there feeling “spa drunk” which has nothing to do with alcohol but everything to do with barely functioning beyond sipping your post-treatment cucumber water because your body is so relaxed and happy.

We ended each night in our robes, holding hands, and looking out at the sunset. It was a date night, a staycation, a romantic retreat, everything in one and we found it right here in our hometown, on the edge of the city.
