Hope in Shadows Calendar 2026

The Hope in Shadows calendar project was created by Pivot Legal Society in 2003 and gifted to Megaphone Magazine’s vendors in 2016. Each year, the project engages up to 150 Downtown Eastside community members in a photo contest. Participants are provided a theme, a single-use camera and training on how to gather consent from photo subjects, and sent out into the streets for 5 days to take images of their lives. Returned cameras are developed for a jury of community members and staff to parse down to the Top 30.

This year’s theme, Humour, is a collection of images that spark light and laughter. With over 115 participants and 1,500 submitted images, the top 13 images are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

The calendar is purchased by Megaphone vendors for $10 and sold on the street for $20, with vendors keeping the profits. Every year, dozens of vendors return to Megaphone during the calendar season to sell calendars to be able to afford holiday gifts for friends and family, or to increase their income.

Support Megaphone Magazine

From the Vendor Hub at 312 Main Street, Megaphone serves around 150 vendors. As frontline workers, they are normally open to the public Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:30pm. They sell products to vendors, provide non-judgmental, trauma-informed programs and crisis support, and engage with the Downtown Eastside community. They are partners, advocates, and at times, first responders on the street. Consider a donation to Megaphone, beyond your calendar or magazine purchase, to support their important community work.

Get Tickets for the Evening Fundraiser
