4 Unique Ways to Use Your Local Library
I recently saw a video online about how someone borrowed a pack of solar panels from the Maple Ridge Library and it got me thinking about how our local libraries are invaluable resources that go beyond book-lending and storytimes.
The neighbourhood library, for me, is also where I go to print since I haven’t owned a printer in about 20 years. From being intergenerational social hubs and quiet creative spaces, to maker-spaces, meeting rooms, or a spot for a free public washroom, WiFi, or computer access — libraries are awesome! Here are some unique ways to use your local library as a resource:

Podcasting Studio
The Vancouver Public Library (VPL) has an Inspiration Lab on level 3 of the Central Branch in Downtown Vancouver. The lab features recording studios, a high-performance computer lab with audio, video and image editing software, as well as graphic design and self-publishing software. They also have analog-to-digital conversion stations for various forms of older media. Studios can be booked in advance.
All of these services are free with your library card!

The Surrey Public Library has a similar resource called Tech To Go incuding Chromebooks, tape converters, energy meters, and more.
Special Events
As an author, a highlight for me when my first book came out was hosting a workshop at the Surrey Public Library, where I grew up. Libraries not only host panels and info-sessions, some also have LEGO events, Nintendo parties, crafting sessions, baby time, employment services, sessions for newcomers to Canada, and more.
- Surrey Public Library Events
- Fraser Valley Library Events
- New Westminster Library Events
- Burnaby Library Events
- Vancouver Library Events
- The VPL also has a special event where you can borrow a puppy to read with at Trout Lake. The next event is September 9th.
These are just some of the ways you can upgrade your library experience and make the most of these incredible community resources. Check in with your local branch for more information and insights.
