- Tickets: Open to all ages, VIFF offers reduced pricing of $8 tickets for Youth aged 12 and under for all films in this series.
The series will feature gems such as My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke, Studio Ghibli Forever! launches just in time for Spring Break, with the first installment, focused on the years 1984 to 1999, screening from March 13 to 25 at the VIFF Centre.

Screening in chronological order, beginning with Hayao Miyazaki’s first film as writer-director Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, each title will play twice—once as a matinee in an English language dub and again, the following evening, in the original Japanese with English subtitles. Select evening shows will be introduced by local animators and scholars, including Jeff Chiba Stearns, Keith Blackmore, and Ann Marie Fleming.
Continuing the story, Studio Ghibli Forever! Part Two will feature monthly screenings of Ghibli favourites including Spirited Away, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle and more, and play out through the remainder of 2023.
VIFF’s retrospective series follows news that Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki will come back from retirement with a new feature film, How Do You Live?, destined for release later this year.
