Science World Enlists More Nerds
byBack in July, Science World launched a fundraising and awareness campaign named “The World Needs More Nerds” calling for its followers to join the nerd revolution and help fundraise to keep the geodesic dome’s doors open. Dr. Bonnie Henry can be seen as a smiling 7-year old in the campaign imagery and Astronaut Chris Hadfield was also featured in the campaign to help bring awareness to fundraising efforts.
Now, they have recruited more famous nerds to help save them from closure and loss of revenue due to COVID-19.
Science World Enlists More Nerds
“The World Needs More Nerds” features a wide range of scientific superstars as kids. Like Jane Goodall, and NFL player Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff who has a medical doctorate and has opted out of the NFL season to continue working on the frontlines in Canada. The campaign also features local BC heroes.
Science World had to close their doors on March 14 and lost their main revenue stream—visitors. Since reopening, they’ve received an average of 380 visitors a day in August, or 12% of usual attendance. The revenue from this attendance is not a sustainable financial model and makes for an uncertain future for the non-profit organization. This has had an impact on the wider community as Science World’s field trip bursary program and On The Road program have also been badly hit.
