Spring Break in Coquitlam: Things to do 2020 Edition

Looking for ideas to entertain the kids this Spring Break? The fun begins early in Coquitlam, kicking off with some festivals, special events, sports tournaments and camps. 

Oh, but that’s just the start. We’ve compiled a list of ways to keep your kids busy during the break and throughout the entire month.  

Also, be sure to pick up their newly released 2020 Travel & Experience Guide from any Coquitlam City facility (libraries, recreation centres, City Hall) or read it online!

Special Events

Festival du Bois (March 6-8, 2020)
This year’s Festival du Bois actually takes place the weekend before the start of Spring Break, so don’t miss out! It’s a family-friendly festival atmosphere filled with live music, dancing, shows and fun activities. Did we mention this weekend celebration of francophone and French-Canadian culture is the largest of its kind in BC? 

Spring Break Festival (March 17-19, 2020)
Spring Break Festival at Evergreen Cultural Centre is a huge hit for school-aged theatre fans! Enjoy DuffleBag Theatre’s fun adaptations of the beloved classics Beauty & the Beast and Peter Pan. Choose from six shows over three days. 

Outdoor Activities

Learn to Fish
Did you know both Lafarge Lake and Como Lake are regularly stocked with rainbow trout? Get the lowdown on fishing in Coquitlam. Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC is offering fishing lessons by donation to kids age 5-12 this Spring Break. Upcoming lessons are scheduled for Como Lake on March 19 or Lafarge Lake on March 26 but make sure you pre-register for a guaranteed spot. 

Hunt for Treasure
Geocaching is a fun activity you can do as a family, and Coquitlam’s parks are rich with geocaches (hidden containers). All you need to play is the GPS on your cellphone – and to register for free at geocaching.com. Fun fact: Maillardville has 12 caches with historical connections to the area. 

Disc Golf 
Head to Mundy Park to play its free, nine-hole disc golf course (also known as frisbee golf). Nets are on site as permanent targets. 

Take a Hike
Why not explore the great outdoors? You’ll find a variety of hiking trails throughout Coquitlam, from easy strolls to rugged wilderness treks. One to try is Minnekhada Regional Park, try the High Knoll trail for the view, or stay low and do some birdwatching at the marsh.  

Go for a Ride
Spring calls for family bike rides. One spot to try is Colony Farm Regional Park, which offers long, flat trails with river and mountain views plus plenty of interesting bird life along the way. You’ll find picnic tables and washrooms near the community gardens.

Indoor playground 
The perfect cure for cabin fever. Release that childish energy at Crash Crawly’s, which features a crazy maze of tunnels, bridges, ball pits and slides. Laser tag and glow-in-the-dark mini golf are fun for all ages. 

Bowling 
The polished 5- and 10-pin lanes at Zone Bowling are simply among the best in Metro Vancouver. With pop-up bumpers for kids, automatic scorekeeping and plenty of on-site food options, this is a fun place to while away an afternoon. 

Ready, Set, PLAY! (March 21, 2020)
Run, jump, throw, balance and wheel. Join us for family playtime with loads of fun, physical activities. Geared toward families with kids age 5-12; at Pinetree Community Centre. Free! 

Spring Break Camps in Coquitlam

You may still find availability with the City of Coquitlam’s affordable Spring Break Camps. These include swimming, sports and other adventures. See page 29 of their Program Guide. 

Also, Evergreen Cultural Centre is offering Spring Break Arts Camps this year for kids age 6-11 and a teen’s Performing Arts Camp for 12-16-year-olds. For the Kids on Stage Performing Arts Camp, campers will write their own scripts, make characters, choose costumes, make a set and perform in the studio theatre at the end of the week. In the Kids in the Arts Studio, campers will try their hand at a variety of different art-making techniques and prepare their own gallery exhibition for friends and family.

Here are some other events you won’t want to miss this month:

Kim’s Convenience (March 3, 2020): A corner store comedy at Evergreen Cultural Centre. Mr. Kim, a Korean shopkeeper, grapples with both a changing neighbourhood landscape and the chasm between himself and his second-generation of offspring. 

Ringette U14, U16A, U19A Provincial Championships (March 6-8, 2020): Watch theRingette U14, U16A, U19A Provincial Championships at the Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex.

Coquitlam Craft Beer Festival (March 7, 2020): Moms and dads, need a break from the kids’ activities? This event showcases more than 45 craft breweries and includes beer-friendly snacks. It all takes place at the stunning setting of Westwood Plateau Golf Club. Get your tickets.

Exhibitions Opening at Place des Arts (March 27, 2020): Drop by the opening reception for three new shows, which will be on display until April 23, 2020. Free!
