Archive Photos of the Day: King Studio
byThe Vancouver Public Library and City of Vancouver Archives host collections of images that have been catalogued including works from Major Matthews (found of the Vancouver Archives), Leonard Frank, W.J. Moore, Philip Timms, and dozens of others. The library has one of these collections for King Studio:
“Howard King moved with his family to Walkerton, Ontario in 1894 and learned photography there from a Mr. Rawe about 1894. He then came to the West Coast and was employed as a picture framer by S.J. Thompson. He operated under his own studio, King Photo Studio, from 1899 to 1905. He also worked in New Westminster and Nanaimo as a photographer.” [Source: Vancouver Archives]
“The King Studio was established in 1903 in Vancouver by Howard King. While it became known as a portrait studio, King and his successors, Valentine and Blanche Vinson, Mrs. Candlish and Mssrs. Aird, Bing and Hodgskiss were also involved in industrial photography. [Source: Memory BC]
“The King Studio included amongs its clients the Dominion Experimental Farm, the Hudson’s Bay Company, Spencer’s, Henry Birks and Sons, the Anglo-Canadian Shipping Company, and the architectural firm of Townley and Matheson. The fonds consists of photographs depicting companies, buildings, and industrial sites in Vancouver and area as well as advertising and display photographs.” [Source: Memory BC]
