Ironclad Art Manhole Design Challenge
byEarlier this year there was a call to artists in the City of Vancouver to come up with designs for storm and sanitary sewer covers. Over 1,000 designs were submitted to the Ironclad Art Manhole Design Challenge and a jury narrowed the pack down to 152, and then to 28.

On June 1st, the artists who submitted the best two designs will be announced and they will each receive $2,000. Their works will then be cast in iron and used on city streets.
Starting today, you can check out a free exhibition at the Interurban Gallery between 1:00pm and 5:00pm, which will run until June 8th. This exhibition will showcase all of the works submitted through the challenge contest.
There is also a public vote for People’s Choice which is taking place online and winners of that contest will be announced on June 10th. Follow the latest information about the Ironclad Art Manhole Challenge on Facebook and Twitter.

Nice, I appreciate that art is weaving it’s way into city infrastructure like these sewer covers and electric boxes. They look more appealing and less of an eye sore!
Who would have thought a man hole cover could be so beautiful. Great design.
That’s a cool idea. I wouldn’t mind seeing all the designs in person.
