London Drugs Recycling Options and Earth Day Prize Giveaway

Comments 402 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Earth Day is coming up on Monday, April 22nd and London Drugs is reminding consumers that they host a variety of options for recycling and purchasing eco-friendly goods. Leading by example, more than 74 per cent of the company’s waste is recycled or repurposed, instead of going to landfill. The Olympic Village Store in Vancouver has also achieved a 96% recycling rate.

London Drugs Grand Opening and BC Children's Hospital Campaign

Since the 2008 launch of London Drugs’ educational ‘What’s the Green Deal‘ program and the support from its staff and customers, London Drugs now tallies more than 42 million pounds of materials recycled including: Styrofoam, batteries, computers, televisions, cell phones, paper, plastic, cardboard, and metals.

London Drugs recycles responsibly, shipping TVs, computers, VCRs, printers and other electronics (in BC) to Genesis Recycling. Non-toxic materials are sorted and bundled for sale as commodities for remanufacture. Circuit boards and TV tubes are sent to North American smelters such as TECK (in Trail, BC) where they are safely melted down and their precious metals recovered. They’re even getting into recycling candybar wrappers and beauty packaging.

The following items can be recycled at London Drugs locations:

  • Electrical and Electronic goods (TVs, VCRs, computers, monitors, printers etc.)
  • Small Appliances
  • Styrofoam, plastic and cardboard packaging from our products
  • Cell phones, PDA and rechargeable batteries
  • Alkaline Batteries
  • Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFL’s) and fluorescent light tubes up to 4-foot lengths
  • Disposable cameras
  • Ink jet cartridges
  • Laser cartridges
  • Metal film canisters
  • Plastic bags
  • Pop bottles and cans (BC only)
  • Insurance plastic folders
  • Laser cartridges
  • Brita water filters
  • Candy bar and cosmetic packaging
  • Soda stream containers
  • Toys

To celebrate the 150+ products on London Drugs shelves that have environmentally-preferable benefits or certifications, they have offered up a prize pack valued at $200 for me to give away to one lucky reader (pictured below).

1 way we can all reduce our waste footprint as a consumer is to reduce our food footprint by eating more local, organic, in-season foods. Shopping at our local farmer’s market & natural foods store. Purchase local, in-season foods. Choose foods with less packaging to reduce waste. Last but not least COMPOST our food waste. Thank you for the chance to win this awesome this eco-friendly prize pack! Happy Earth Day.

I have always tried to live as Green as possible. Raised my family with that belief as well. Started with healthy home cooking from scratch…to sewing my own diapers and hanging them on a line I recycled years before collection and drop off sites were available…stored then hauled to the nearest location in a nearby city. I taught my children that even one person could make a difference. It showed them the amounts that did not need to go into a dumpsite. My husband was skeptical but soon saw the value of living a greener lifestyle! Now that my children are grown they incorporate living Green into their lives as well! I have gardened, composted…the most interesting would be…and people often stop to ask about my push mower! I grew up in the sixties and used one to cut the grass…I have the greenest grass on the block!!Cant say that sometimes it hasn’t crossed my mind to purchase a gas mower…it would be soooooo much easier!! I have made a conscious choice to go what I can on a personal level!!

Check the softness of your local water supply. If it’s soft enough you can reduce the amount of detergent you use when doing dishes or laundry by about half and be as effective as when following package directions. The ‘convenient’ individual detergent packets don’t allow this and are counter productive to proper environmental stewardship.

We recycle as much as we possibly can. Pop bottles, newspapers, Cardboard, glass & plastics as well as all cans. We also compost, & we also take our own reusable bags when we grocery shop. I also carry 2 reuaseable bags in my purse so I never need a store bad. I also water my entire garden From the rain water we collect in our2 rain barrels. When we landscaped our backyard, we used reclaimed bricks 7 Patio blocks instead of buy new to keep them out of the landfill.. In total we have perhaps 1 small bag of garbage once a week. we only put out our garbage bin once in every 6 to 8 weeks. Can’t wait until our recycle bins are delivered as this will cut down on the gas we now use. I try to make my own cleaners out of natural ingredients as wedon’t think chemical cleaners are very environmentally friendly. I try to save laundry up so I am only doing large loads to save on water, we have only about 4 loads of laundry a week.
