  3. Ashley MMonday, August 13th, 2012 — 11:34am PDT

My #1 summer energy saving tip is to use sunlight instead of electricity to light/heat the rooms in your home. We should take advantage of the free energy provided by the sun in summer months, as our fall/winter months tend to be quite dark and cold so our homes require more energy than our shorter spring and summer months. Plus there’s just something special about how the afternoon sun filters through the blinds at the end of the day…

  4. sharonne katzMonday, August 13th, 2012 — 11:42am PDT

I turn the air conditioner up a degree. It saves a lot of energy.

  8. Sharon DongMonday, August 13th, 2012 — 11:43am PDT

Keeping my blinds closed all day keeps the heat out, cool air in, open windows and front/back door for air flow instead of having fan or a/c on.

  9. SandraMonday, August 13th, 2012 — 11:44am PDT

Having lots of food in your fridge keeps it from warming up too fast when the door is open. So your fridge doesn’t have to work as hard to stay cool.

For those times when you need to use energy, choose ENERGY STAR® products:

Buy ENERGY STAR® certified table lamps and light fixtures, and replace your incandescent light bulbs that are used more than two hours per day with ENERGY STAR® compact fluorescent bulbs.

Install an ENERGY STAR® programmable thermostat so that you don’t forget to adjust it during your busy summer activities.

Use ENERGY STAR® appliances and Air conditioners and be sure to not run your non-essential appliances during peak times.

Did you know…. Your dishwasher will use less water than washing dishes by hand. Let dishes air-dry to save even more energy!

Nothing beats hanging the laundry on the line – fresh, sundried clothes. Especially great for smelly athletic wear! 🙂

  73. EricaMonday, August 13th, 2012 — 3:44pm PDT

People sometimes forget that running the tap water for long period of time is also energy consuming habit. Always close the bottom of sink and wash dishes with enclosed water to save water consumption.

Also, always turn off light even leaving for short period incase you forget to turn off light and waste energy for long period. 🙂

Saving energy is simple as turning off light while exiting the room. Also, by choosing a day to do laundry, you can collect bigger volume of clothes to be washed and can separate the laundry based on color code, white/underwear, color ones, and black ones 🙂

One last thing is that don’t leave your monitor on even when you are gone for few minutes. Leaving the monitor on will deplete its life expectancy and waste more energy than you might think 🙂

During winter, setting the thermometer of your home heater to one or two degrees lower while you wear long sleeve shirt instead of t shirt in winter, it can save much energy as well!!!

My family tries our best to save energy so that we can not only save money but increase the life expectancy of our eletronics and other goods.

Hopefully this will help ppl save energy 🙂

  145. ShaelynWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 9:37am PDT

A summer saving tip? How about taking colder showers? They help you stay cool and reduce heating costs. I also keep my lights off since it stays sunny a lot longer these days 🙂 Also, how about going out for a nice walk instead of turning on the wii for a workout!

  146. SherryWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 9:37am PDT

In the summertime, try walking or taking public transit instead of taking the car and wasting gas.

  147. MelainaWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 9:38am PDT

I open all windows in the house at night when it’s cool and all windows, blinds and curtains are closed (and lights off!) in the daytime to keep the cool air inside. Also take cooler showers and wash dishes, etc., with cooler water.

  148. TFWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 9:43am PDT

If your computer must be left on when you are not using it make sure that you enable the ENERGY STAR power-management feature on your computer for “sleep” mode. Set it to turn the monitor off after 10 minutes and the computer off after 20 minutes. At full power your computer and monitor could draw over 250 watts of power; in “sleep” mode, 15 watts. Screen savers do not save energy and can prevent your computer from “sleeping.”

  154. susieWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 3:10pm PDT

Keep the drapes pulled and the windows closed during the daytime for all windows on the sunny side of your home! Open them up at night to let the evening air flow thru.

I hardly ever use my clothes dryer during the hot weather. Not only does it save energy by not using the dryer, it saves energy not having to cool the house after using the dryer!

  161. mitziWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 9:18pm PDT

    Dry Line. Walk. BBQ!

  162. wanjikuwWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 9:36pm PDT

Leave the windows open instead of using air conditioning.

  163. JonathanWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 10:01pm PDT

My top energy-saving tip for summer is to make use of the sunshine in several ways – no need to turn on the a/c or fans given the warm temperatures by opening windows/doors, let the sunlight warm things as required (e.g. clothes drying instead of dryer machine useage, no use of heaters), minimize use of electrical lights and use the natural light

  164. MarianneWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 10:17pm PDT

solar-powered energy for temperature and electricity.

  165. MimiWednesday, August 15th, 2012 — 11:59pm PDT

Use a fan to help circulate cooled air and reduce the amount your air conditioner or heat pump must work to keep your home cool. If you have a ceiling fan, set it counter-clockwise to create a wind chill effect.

  166. AnthonyThursday, August 16th, 2012 — 6:14am PDT

  169. Mary TThursday, August 16th, 2012 — 10:15am PDT

Dry your clothes on the line instead of the dryer

  170. Angela HustonThursday, August 16th, 2012 — 10:31am PDT

Open the blinds – no more need for the lights on! Open the front and back doors and windows to allow a breeze throughout the house – no more need for fans or airconditioning.

We cook one night and cook enough meat to have it over a salad the next day. Enjoying our meals outside, without having to use the BBQ or stove two days in a row.

There are so many ways to save energy, get creative and enjoy!

  171. KathrynThursday, August 16th, 2012 — 10:39am PDT

No need for for lights or dryers….open blinds and hang your clothes in the glorious sunshine. Another way to conserve energy at home in the summer….go out and stay out

close curtains to keep heat out so don’t need to use the air conditioner, when not at home unplug electronics.

  177. ShaenaThursday, August 16th, 2012 — 3:34pm PDT

Take short, cool showers in the summer instead of long hot ones. It helps keep you nice and cool, lowers your energy consumption and gives you more time to be out an about. After that shower, stay cool by keeping the blow dryer unplugged and let your hair air dry. A little styling creme keeps the frizz at bay.

  178. Jane BThursday, August 16th, 2012 — 4:33pm PDT

Unplug everything when not in use i.e. cell phone chargers, toasters, laptops. Turn off all the lights when you leave a room even if only for 15 minutes. Close the blinds during the day if you are leaving your house so the heat doesnt get in through your windows. When you wash your vegetables/fruits in the kitchen, save the used water to water your indoor plants. Small things add up and every little bit counts.

  179. KellyThursday, August 16th, 2012 — 5:03pm PDT

Don’t open your bright lights and instead enjoy the sun shine!

  184. PeterThursday, August 16th, 2012 — 10:07pm PDT

Turn down the brightness on your computer screens and your mobile device screens. That will reduce the number of charging cycles and hence lead to an energy saving.
