Trapp+Holbrook New Westminster
byTrapp + Holbrook is New Westminster’s latest real estate development that will build up modern living spaces along Columbia Street in our province’s original capital. This reconstruction of the historic Trapp building will be performed by Robert Fung and his team at The Salient Group who have transformed many prominent buildings in Gastown.
“The historic Trapp Block was built in 1899. Formerly home to Army and Navy, the site has sat empty since 1977. Facing Columbia Street and backing onto Front Street, Trapp Block is part of the historical Golden Mile, once a prosperous neighbourhood in New Westminster and once again, its charm is drawing us back!
What you can expect from Trapp + Holbrook is a marriage of the old and the new: 196 homes ranging from 500 to 1261 square feet, 20 storeys in height with panoramic views of the Fraser River. The Revitalization
When I was young, my family spent every weekend in New Westminster and the Hyack Parade was an annual tradition for us. My first job in retail was at Royal City Centre shopping mall, and the first place I looked for a wedding dress was on Columbia Street. Since that time, I haven’t spent many days in New Westminster – we’ve just sped by on the SkyTrain on our way to the end of the line.
If you haven’t taken the time to explore New Westminster today, take an hour or two to discovering the changes along Columbia and the river. Towers now flank the SkyTrain tracks, there’s a full mini-mall of shops and services within the New Westminster SkyTrain station itself, a new movie theatre, and the Quay has been rebranded as River Market. The new Waterfront Pier Park will host a grand opening celebration June 16, 2012.
Our Day Out
John and I took the time to explore New Westminster a few weeks ago, from coffee and tea shops, to the River Market and Antique Alley on Front Street. We even stopped to take a few photos from the parkade along the water where scenes from Jackie Chan’s Rumble in the Bronx were filmed (with mountains in the background and all).

I love spending time at River Market. There are so many delicious things to do there.
I recently moved to New Westminster in February and live in a residential neighborhood around 6th and Royal Ave. The neighborhood has some exciting places developing like the amazing Karmavore (Vegan) shop and bakery and the cool mid-mod Red Brick furniture shop. In addition, a newly opened indie coffee shop called Quantum is giving the local Starbucks a run for it’s $’s. These new little shops are a great feature to the neighborhoods and will certainly add appeal to perspective buyers!
I was born and raised in New Westminster. I’ve lived here for 25 years, and honestly, don’t see any reason to move away. New West has everything you could really want. Close to transit, a multitude of shops, and easy access to anywhere in the lower mainland.

Landmark Cinemas!
The highlight of New Westminster to me is the Quay and River Market. Great long walk along the waterfront, free tours, nice shops and food places. I hope to buy my home in New Westminster, either along the water or in uptown in the next couple of years!
Definitely the Quay.
I grew up in White Rock and spent a lot of time off and on in New West because of the skytrain, and dated a fellow there for years and years.
It always disappointed me that New West was this forgotten suburb and had so little to offer, and it’s phenomenal to see the revitalization and the cultural spread happening out there.
What a terrific job the city has done to inspire investment and embrace bigger ideas. It’d be cool to spend a day in the New New West.
There are so many great shops and services that my girlfriend and I enjoy here that it’s hard to say. The one thing we really love to do is go for walks. We love the boardwalk along the river, heading over to Queen’s Park and the petting zoo and admiring the lovely heritage homes in that area. You can have a great day in New West even if you’re on a budget.
I forgot the highlight! I actually love the river out there and cycling near it. I think the cycling growth in New West is something to get excited about, and on my list for when I visit Vancouver/GVRD is the BC Parkway riding trail that actually originates near Vancouver’s Olympic Village and ends out at the New West Quay. With all the great dining options in New West now, one can start in Van, cycle out there on great paths, have a great meal, and skytrain the bike home!

I have to admit, even though I’ve lived in Vancouver my entire life, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been to New Westminster. For antiques, I think Main Street, for farm markets, I think Granville Island. I would love the chance to “rediscover” New West and see how much it’s changed since the days of going to the Land Title Office with my dad when I was a kid. From the pictures in the post, I almost wouldn’t recognize New West anymore. The waterfront looks like a big modern city, the shops still have that old world charm and the dining looks 5-star. I’ll have to take to day to check it out.

New West Quay
The highlight of New Westminster? The fact that it’s my home. 🙂 My husband and I moved here four years ago from East Vancouver and we love it here. There are so many awesome communities within this small city – your post has highlighted only a small fraction of the amazingness that is New Westminster.
I’m moving to New West mid June so this would be a nice way to get welcomed to the hood!

I’ve lived in New West’r off and on in the 26 years I’ve lived in BC, so I have tons of good memories in the Royal City. When I first moved out on my own, I lived just behind the library on Ash Street. My husband and I met because we were neighbours, living on the same floor of our apartment building. This fall we’ll celebrate our 22nd anniversary. 🙂

Copp’s New West Shoes is an amazing piece of history as well a fabulous shoe store.
About 10 years ago I worked 1 summer on the main strip and would eat lunch almost every day at a panini shop and walk along the water. Found memories… hmmm I wonder if that panini shop is sill there?
A recent highlight in New West would be Wild Rice, I can’t wait to go back!
Having gone to Hume Park Elementary as a kid, I am no stranger to the park scene on a hot summer day. There are always tons of families having a BBQ or birthday party or just playing some sports. It has it all: Playground, pool, spray park, tennis courts, lacrosse box, baseball diamond. I also have fond memories of playing hide and seek in the beautiful green trails connecting upper and lower Hume. Once, on the last day of grade five, my friend’s mom let us float down the Brunette river on an air mattress. It was icky with bugs but it was just a blast. And the sledding wipeouts behind the baseball diamond, those were the best. Or the guy that used to do halloween fireworks in the lacrosse box that brought the whole small community together. Hume Park is a great representation of the heart of New West, even if it’s not in the direct centre. Of course, there are many other aspects about New West that I absolutely adore, the River Market being one of them.

I live in Sapperton, New West. The transformation of the downtown over the last five years is great.
Lots of great parks in New West, but my favorite New West secret is in Sapperton. There is a restaurant called “The Ranch,” which the owner opened so he would have somewhere to sell his own grainfeed cattle and pork. Great smoked meat – there isn’t a better pulled pork sandwich in the Royal City.

Hubby & I have always loved the feel or vibe of New West. The heritage homes, cobbled streets give it a real old world, small town feel. Love the fact that there are so many quaint shops/restaurants all within walking distance.
I’m new to Vancouver and have never been to New West so a chance to experience it through this package would be a highlight in and of itself!
There is a great burger place in New Westminster named Burger Heaven. I love the burgers there – they’re huge and tasty!
Currently coming to school everyday in New West. ..but a younger highlight would be going to Army & Navy and the old quay.

I think people who live in high rises in downtown New West are lucky. I checked out a place years ago, and the view of the river was amazing. On cloudy days, the water looks crappy, but when it’s sunny it’s the BEST.
I just graduated from Douglas College, and my days on campus were certainly memorable!
Best part of #NewWest is the welcoming people. Hands down.

I have many fond memories of picnics and BBQs with my family at Queen’s Park.
I love the people of New Westminster. I lived there for a year and a half before my circumstances dictated a move back to Burnaby. I miss the neighbourly feel and the strong sense of community you can feel just by walking down the street. Of course, the historical aspect just adds to the ambience of the little city.
I always like to stop at the New West Old Spagetti Factory – way less of a wait than the Gastown location!

Probably a recent highlight of New Westminster for me would be the new Westminster Pier Park along the water front near Pattulo Bridge. Can’t wait until it’s completed. I also really enjoyed the casino and the sushi.
I was taking courses at the Justice Institute, hanging outside with class mates, when all of a sudden a bird pooped on my head. That is my most lasting memory of being in New West.

Best memory? May Day in Queen’s Park. The Anvil Battery, the square dance and the May Pole are great memories as a kid.
The British Store on Columbia is a definite New West highlight. I mean, it’s not as if it’s EASY to find Irn-Bru or steak and kidney pie over here.

I’ve been a resident of New West since March of 2008 (the only place I could afford to buy!). I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t explored the area much as I’m always trekking to Vancouver or Burnaby. Recently I’ve made a few trips to the ‘new’ River Market and I’m excited to see the changes. I’m loving the Italian Coffee/Gelato shop and can’t wait to try the new BBQ place, and for the burger place to come in. Also need to plan a night out at Wild Rice! I’m hoping the new park will make things even better. Now we just need a few more cute shops and places to eat on Columbia Street!

My highlights are my home, walking the the pup on the Quay, Wild Rice, Hops, Drink Lounge, putting the sign for WIld Rice away @ 5:30am when they forget 😉 too much to list. I see it all every day. Several times a day. It’s my home.
I have fond memories of New West’s Moody Park – used to play there when we would visit my grandma. My dad in particular loved their toy excavator! 🙂 I’m also glad to see that the Quay is getting revitalized.

Heritage homes, Keg, boardwalk at River Market, Burger Heaven & all the beautiful flowers work the city workers look after and plant down at the New West Quay & Donald’s Market…oh and just discovered Holland Deli recently.
I spent a lot of time in New Westminster in the 70’s and I still love the city so much. The most exciting memory I have is visiting Raymond Burr’s childhood home in New Westminster. It was a lovely old home and being a Perry Mason and Ironsides fan I was thrilled to be spending time in the home where he grew up.
The Army & Navy Store reminds me of shopping there when I was little with my mom, she loved that store and always took us there around Christmas time. I still venture out to New Westminster just to shop there ~ love it!

Two highlights of New West for me are the Massey Theatre, which features the Royal City Musical Theatre production each spring, and Old Spaghetti Factory by New West Station.
Love attending the Hyack Festival every year since I moved here, I cannot wait to share it with our baby due in July.

When I was a kid, every year I had my birthday party near the playground in Queen’s Park. We’d get some Kentucky Fried Chicken, and have a great time. Happy memories 😀

We have spent a lot of time in Queens Park, and at the quay. New West also has a nice shopping centre with Market Place and other stores near the sky train – its very convienent and a great place to explore.

I like the Inn at the Quay Hotel.. Quaint place with a neat view. You’re up high but it brings you down to earth.
I have a pic on my mantle with my father (in zoot suit ) holding my hand (I was probably 2 yrs old) outside the Columbia Theatre. Douglas Fairbanks was starring in The Great manhunt. New West was our “big city” growing up in Fort Langley . Driving across the one lane railway bridge, lunch at Woodwards (Ham sandwiches- crusts off on white bread – decadent) and burgers at the White Spot , in the car across from Woodwards. For a big nite out – head over to the Rob Roy on Edmonds.

River Market
My family and I always went to the Spaghetti Factory to celebrate birthdays. I loved sitting in the caboose and sipping on the Miss Piggy and other special kid’s drinks. One of my other favourite New West memories as a kid was going to Queen’s Park for their 80’s version of a zip line.
The new construction at the New West skytrain station will make it very convenient. I like the idea that there are grocery stores and a movie theater so close to public transportation.
I love the Great Wall tea company! Love that wall.. I’ve had their tea a couple times 🙂
As a child I spent weekends at the Quay with my parents who used to sell stuff in a little booth there. I remembered it as being a fun and exciting place. Over the years it went way downhill. What they’ve done with the River Market is great! It’s become a fun and exciting place all over again.

well so many things ive only lived here two years or so, but exploring each and every inch of every park with my dog is for sure my number one!!I have lived many places with my dog and new west seems to be both of our favorite. So many pups around town to see so much park space, often my friends in vancouver are jealous over how clean and how well looked after our little piece of heaven is.

I grew up in New Westminster. My first kiss-New Westminster. I had my 1 and only child in New Westminster. I no longer live in New West but whenever I go into New West I have to drive by our old house…brings back such fond memories. The Salmonbellies Lacrosse 🙂 I would love to just spend the day walking around on a nice sunny day looking at all of the changes that have occured in the past few years. The old Columbia (Burr) Theatre that has been restored…biggest pet peeve is when someone calls the city New Westminister (add the extra i) drives me CRAZY!! I always have to correct them. I have even heard radio hosts make the mistake and I have to call them up and correct them (very passionate about it!) This would make for a beautiful afternoon for my son and I. Thank you.

I am really interested to visit these fabulous new shops in New Westminster, especially Wild Rice. My husband and I lived in a heritage house Uptown for a year, so we have a lot of good memories there. In fact we bought our first couch at a consignment store called Champagne Taste, which is just down the hill from Cloud 9, a new bakery I’d also love to try. New West has tons of character – from Antique Alley, to Queens Park, the Quay, and the new Plaza 88 development. I’m starting to wonder why we ever left?!

Always passing on the train, but only every stopped once, and that was in 2008 when on holiday here to visit The Keg. Would love to explore though.

I love going to the Quay and walking along the path by the water. The gardens are beautiful. Of course, dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory is always enjoyed! I would love the chance to try out the Gift Card places too!!

Oh my gosh, I spent a lot of my 20s in New West. Fondest memories were probably as a server at the New West Keg. What a great group of people to work with. We had a blast!

I love all the bridal shoppes and the river market
i lived in upper New West for a couple of years and watched from my ivory tower as they built the Safeway complex at the old Woodwards site (I still miss Woodwards) across from Moody Park. Loved it there. Miss New West and really should go back and see what has changed since the 90s.

My cousin lives in New Westminster, so I like it New Westmeinster becausse I have a cousin who lives and loves it.
Queen’s Park petting Zoo is very cool.
New West has always seemed like a great balance between living in the city and still being not in the thick of it, great place for families!!
