Book Warehouse is Closing
byBook Warehouse, one of Vancouver’s most beloved local book stores, will be closing its remaining locations after a final sale blowout that began today.
“Who knows what we’ll be doing as the weeks go on? We sort of forgot to stop ordering books, so our warehouse is jammed with thousands more books. We’ll keep putting them into the stores, which should give many opportunities for our customers to say their goodbyes to their favorite booksellers, and walk away with even more incredible bargains.” Founder Sharman King (via Press Release)
Book Warehouse started out in 1980 and you may remember their old commercials if you grew up around Vancouver that featured King playing a tuba or trombone.
Within a week of the Vancouver Playhouse closing down its operations, and the announcement that the Ridge Theatre will be demolished, this is salt in the wound of Vancouver’s creative communities. A theatre company, a movie house, and a book store chain, gone.
Let’s support the Book Warehouse during its final days. Go online, visit their locations in person, and scoop up some books that are going for bargain basement prices. As a writer, published author, book reader, and Vancouverite, I encourage everyone to take a few minutes, put down the smartphone, close the laptop, and open up a book. On your lunch break, with your children, at the beach, or curled up on the couch.
Visit the Book Warehouse on Broadway, West 10th, Lonsdale, or Davie until the shelves are empty. Follow the Book Warehouse on Twitter and Facebook for more information.

What a shame! Soon all the stores are going to be so high-end in Vancouver the average Joe will be completely priced out of the market. Sorry to say it but “Bellingham anyone!?”
I’m heartbroken for all three losses!
So sad. Book Warehouse is by far my favourite bookstore in Vancouver. Really, it’s the only new bookstore the I actually go to.
I took my daughters to Book Warehouse today and we bought a pile of books including some classic Golden books and Richard Scarry. Thanks for the encouragement to get out there and show Book Warehouse that we support independent bookstores!
heck, very sad. I visit YVR a few times a year, mostly as a quick get away from Calgary. Book Warehouse is always one of my happy ‘Vancouver’ places to visit. It’s a shame when distinctive local places shut-down. Another blow to local character. *sigh* Vancouver in general has always done a pretty decent job in having a great variety or local retail, one of the reasons i visit regularly. The big box chains are not a reason to visit.
Also too bad about the loss of cultural facilities…strange, here in Calgary it’s tough to get tickets to anything, things sell out consistently these days.
All of this news is so sad.At Christmas I had some amazing finds at Book Warehouse on Broadway. The staff is amazing.
Met the founder Sharman King today during a visit and he is legitimately one of the most enthusiastic and passionate person I’ve ever met towards books. He is not at all bitter towards the closing of his store, and is thankful for the 32 years of great memories that book warehouse has brought him. Wish him all the best, and go and grab your discount books before they are gone.
