Beresford: Burnaby’s Next Great Street

Comments 346 by Rebecca Bollwitt

The City of Burnaby and Intracorp are working together to rejuvenate Beresford Street, located across from Metrotown and directly South of the SkyTrain line. The first phase was the MetroPlace development and the second is Silver, a 38-storey tower. The City’s plan is to make Beresford the next “Great Street”.

A Great Street, as outlined by the Project for Public Spaces includes:

    Beresford Street Scene

  • Attractions & Destinations
  • Identity & Image
  • Seasonal Strategies
  • Diverse User Groups
  • Traffic, Transit & the Pedestrian
  • Amenities, Management
  • Protects Neighbourhoods
  • Active Edge Uses (human-scaled to allow for interaction between indoors and out)
  • Blending of Uses and Modes (ground floor uses and retail activities should spill out into the sidewalks and streets to blur the distinction between public and private space)

With the current plan, Silver’s community on Beresford gets a Walk Score of 97. They would love to know what you would like to see on Beresford as well. Public spaces, gardens, community events, retail, cafes, and more. To get the creative juices flowing for neighbourhood ideas, they have offered up a $250 Metropolis at Metrotown gift card for one Miss604.com reader. Here’s how you can enter to win:

  • Leave a comment naming what you would love to see on a “Great Street” (1 entry)
  • Post the following on Twitter (1 entry)
RT to enter to win $250 to spend @MetropolisatMet from @IntracorpCanada #SilverLiving & @Miss604 http://ow.ly/9LZ86

It’d be great to have a cafe that had seating outside that wasn’t fenced in. They have it all over the world, why can’t we have it in Vancouver!

  56. Diane Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 — 2:48pm PDT

A produce shop and a bakery would be perfect really close to the skytrain station so I can stop and pick up what I need for dinner on my way home from work. Maybe even a butcher? Preferably places that stay open later than 6:00. I wish more skytrain stations had convenient shops next door like Commercial and New West do, and this is a great opportunity to add a lot of convenience at a really busy station. Sure, there’s a lot on offer in the Metrotown mall, but it takes a long time to walk to some of those stores (like Shopper’s Drug Mart, especially). There really needs to be another group daycare in the area, too.

  57. Jen Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 — 2:50pm PDT

  77. Lelainia Lloyd Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 — 4:00pm PDT

I would love to see the opportunity for an ever changing display of street art. During the Olympics, when Granville was transformed into an inviting public space, I loved all the faux trees decorated with paper lanterns made by kids and large sculptures that were lining the sidewalks. I think street art gives wonderful texture to a city. I’d like to see it change with the seasons, so there was always a draw to go down there and see what’s new. It would be a fantastic way for emerging and/or outside artists to get their work out there. I think this would appeal to not just locals, but also anyone visiting the city. A street should not be just about the shops, but the ambiance. I think paying attention to the aesthetics of the area will help create a go-to destination vibe, much like Robson Street.

At grade LRT (light rapid transit)… all the great cities of the world, well, most of them, have LRT. It’s galling to see Geneva with Canadian-built LRT while we are stuck with ultra-expensive above-grade Skytrain-type transit.

would absolutely love to see more fine dining options. small eatries, bakeries, retail stores that support local businesses. outdoor spaces for when it’s nice out or good for an evening stroll. these seems to be what burnaby lacks. I live near this area and find it’s always fast food or asian food that is abundant. not many other options. a place with a granville island type feel would be nice. bringing food carts into the area would be cool too.

  290. Linda Friday, March 23rd, 2012 — 9:18pm PDT

I would echo a lot of the comments here–it would be great if there were only independent small businesses here, like some cafes/coffee shops, a good bakery (with quality breads and pastries matching Terra Breads) and a local fresh produce store (something like Donald’s Market). It should be geared towards the locals and offer a place for the local community converge. The Mall doesn’t offer locals many opportunities for forging a sense of community within the Metrotown neighbourhood.

I would love to see my idea come to life, for the longest time now I’ve been thinking of a way to help out the low income/ everyday people in Vancouver/Burnaby with a community garden, now this is NOT your average garden. I am hoping to put these gardens in the round abouts used to slow traffic… I think if these round abouts had pretty flowers and veggies for people to pick the hunger problem could possibly decrease here in the lowermainland… if you could help me get this started that would be GREAT!!

For a “Great Street”, I would like to see people and activity. A green place for family, kids, and friends to hang out. There should be some shops and restaurants. Food carts on the street would be a great idea too.

  341. Nikki Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 — 10:51am PDT

To me, a new mom, a great street needs to accommodate everyone. I love the idea of integrating all modes of travellers and access to amenities and stores, but too often you go places with your stroller and it feels like an obstacle course. It would be awesome to have enough space that we can all enjoy the new amenities without getting in each other’s way. (And this is in support of wheelchair-bound folks as well!)

  342. Noel Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 — 11:15am PDT

  346. Nicola Thursday, March 29th, 2012 — 10:51am PDT

It would be great to have a european inspired plaza where cafe’s and restaurants can have areas on the street, public benches placed around, an area for an out door market, busker areas and ofcourse some kind of water and garden feature. I love the idea of a rose garden as these have the most wonderful smells and is a pleasant place to come and sit and think (wheelchair accessible ofcourse). Something to make this a community space aswell as a shopping space. Ofcourse this would mean it would have to be a pedestrian zone.
