Dunn’s Famous Poutine Festival

Comments 294 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Dunn’s Famous is currently hosting a poutine promotion, showing off its 6 flavours and poutine styles. From now until March 21, 2012, diners can enjoy any 3 poutines for $9.99 or all 6 selections for $17.99. You can also enjoy a full size poutine Quebecois and draft beer for $9.99 after 10:00pm.

Dunn's Poutine

Poutine options: Quebecoise (cheese curds & Dunn’s special gravy), Dunn’s (cheese curds, Dunn’s special gravy & chopped Montreal smoked meat), Peppercorn (cheese curds & peppercorn sauce), Italienne (cheese curds & meat sauce), Dunn’s Italienne (cheese curds & meat sauce with chopped Montréal smoked meat), Vegetarian (cheese curds, vegetarian gravy).

I stopped by for lunch with my mother to try their 3-poutine special, choosing the Dunn’s, Italienne, and Peppercorn. She preferred the simplicity of the Peppercorn while I enjoyed the multitude of flavours mixed together in the Dunn’s.

Although I acknowledge that most commenters will state their preference in mentioning some type of meat, either smoked, cured, fried, baked, or otherwise prepared, I will take a moment to argue that the best toppings on a poutine are unquestionably the spices. For some, the only spice required is salt (which is strange, considering the gravy is quite salty). Connoisseurs will opt for freshly cracked pepper on top. Different restaurants have provided varied poutine styles, including curry, guacamole, and greek (feta, Mediterranean vinaigrette, etc). I prefer adding one particular spice that stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of flavour-enhancement, sophistication, and classiness: Smoked Hungarian Paprika. If you can get the real stuff imported, then you’ve got a real winner. North American paprika is often quite mild, but there are a bunch of different kinds in Hungary. There’s a hotter kind that really kicks you in the face and brings tears to your eyes. It’s quite simply my favourite poutine topping.

    TL;DR: Paprika
