GigaLinc: GigaPixel Photography Exhibit

Comments 160 by Rebecca Bollwitt

GigaLinc photography exhibition at the Shangri-La Vancouver. This free showcase is open to the public and will feature large-scale panoramic images captured with the help of the GigaPan apparatus.

Photo by Ronnie Miranda www.gigapixel.com. First game at the renovated BC Place.
The image is made up of 600 photos (30 across by 20 down) stitched together and taken over a 40-minute span. The final hi-res file is 100,127 X 48,377 pixels or 4,843 megapixels.

Ronnie also created this timelapse of the BC Place grand re-opening event. Watch for the roof to open.

What GigaLinc Photography Exhibit.
When Thursday, October 13 to Friday, October 14, 2011 from 10:00am to 6:00pm
Where Shangri-la Hotel Vancouver, Blue Moon Theatre,1128 West Georgia, Vancouver

From the organizers: GigaLinc is an exhibition that allows participants to interactively explore large-scale panoramic images. Gigapixel images (100 times the information captured by a 10 megapixel digital camera) are digitally projected onto a large screen that allows viewers to navigate and explore the image in detail using Kinect-based hand-gestures, zooming in and out of areas of particular interest. Surround-sound adds to the multi-sensory experience. GigaLinc was developed by Samuel Cox for his Master’s degree in Digital Imaging and Photography at the University of Lincoln, UK.

Massive screens will display images captured using GigaPixel technology and the exhibit will include the Stanley Cup Game 7 crowd photo that has millions of online views to date. The instrument itself allows you to attach your camera (Canon, Nikon, Olympus, pocket camera, SLR etc.) and does all the panning work for you.

John Biehler had the chance to play with a GigaPan a few month ago and he took some great panoramic shots of the city from West Vancouver (click below to zoom-in and get the full effect).

  8. Rebecca Bollwitt, Miss604 Rebecca BollwittTuesday, October 4th, 2011 — 1:38pm PDT

Hey folks, sorry, the GigaPan is not a camera. It’s an instrument to which you attach your camera. I’ll clarify in the post above.

  9. ColinTuesday, October 4th, 2011 — 1:39pm PDT

  12. Thomas HaydenTuesday, October 4th, 2011 — 1:45pm PDT

Trust me, Miss604 readers, you want one of these GigaPan devices. No matter what type of a photographer you are or what type of camera you have, you will love shooting, processing, and posting these images. In this day of instant gratification with digital photography, gigapixel images are worth the wait. In fact, the wait is half the fun. I’ve had a GigaPan Epic 100 for over a year now and posted hundreds of panoramas all over the web. With an 8 Megapixel Canon Powershot camera I bought in 2005, I have created immersive experiences from everywhere I’ve been in the last year in a half. Those experiences can be found at gigapan.org (GigaView360), Google Earth, Photosynth.net (GigaView), and Bing Maps (just look at Portland, OR, most are mine). Grand Canyon GigaView, my gigapixel virtual tour by river for Google Earth and Bing Maps has been explored by half a million people online (http://gigapanmagazine.org/vol3/issue1/) and subjected my GigaPan robot to tremendous wear, but it keeps on ticking. I’ve dropped it on sandstone, had wind blow down my tripod, and soaked it with water that is too thick with sediment to drink and too thin to plow, but it keeps on ticking. The GigaPan Epic 100 is one tough & versatile device that will open up a whole new world of photography to you. GigaPixel is really a brand new medium and the sooner you get involved the more satisfied you will be. Follow my tweets on the subject @GigaView360.

Many thanks to Ronnie Miranda and Sam Cox for their efforts at bringing this new medium to the people and for the stunning experiences they’ve enabled here with the GigaLinc project. Miss 604, as beat up as my robot is, I’d prefer not to be chosen for a new one. Let someone else starting having as much fun as I have with it. Go, go GigaPixel!

Fantastic discovery (this page and the gigapixel site)!

I have been taking panoramic photos for years (some located here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9776782@N02/sets/72157621448885067/) but I have never taken a gigapixel panoramic photo. Usually, mine max out at 40000 x 5600 pixels, which then need to be reduced to 30000 pixel because of the jpeg limitation. My most complex pano to date required 24 images (in HDR – 3 ev settings each) of False Creek at night. This pano took over an hour to complete because of the wait required due to a mandatory dark frame subtraction for every exposure longer than 8 seconds.

Besides, it would be exceedingly difficult to manually take several hundred photos manually. I’m inspired! I have next week off and I am going to attempt a few gigapixel photos.

I own Kolor’s Autopan Giga, which is half the battle! Anyone looking for a great photographic autostitcher… this one is one of the best available!

    Thanks for this site!
