Vancouver Events for Japan Disaster Relief

Comments 11 by Rebecca Bollwitt

On March 11th a series of earthquakes offshore shook Japan causing a devastating chain of events including a tsunami that permanently redefined the coastline. Thousands lost their lives and the country is still on high alert due to the instability of several nuclear power programs. From the Red Cross to Doctors Without Borders, many helpful organizations are already on the ground to assist. In order to make sure these programs have the resources and manpower required, there are several fundraising events being held around the Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley to show support.

    dear rebecca:

it’s not an event per se. but anyone who is least bit tech savvy can volunteer their time to help the efforts by the Crisis Commons group. http://crisiscommons.org/

social media curation, wiki/data aggregation, openmapping etc. are some of the most needed skills; and specially those who speak/write japanese can be very helpful in translating services.

    http://wiki.crisiscommons.org/wiki/Honshu_Quake

also Vancouver needs to hold our own CrisisCamps so that we can help others during global disaster situation; and also acquaint ourselves as a resilient community for emergency response/preparedness. http://wiki.crisiscommons.org/wiki/CrisisCamps
