Comments 6 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Last October public were invited to submit names for Translink’s new electronic farecard. Nominations were made, votes were placed and we now have the Compass Card. Beating out starfish and Tpass, the winning name was submitted by Oleksiy Gayda from Burnaby.

and SkyTrain’s Colleen Milek show off the new card on Thursday, March 31, 2011

I’ve used the Charlie Card in Boston, Oyster Card in London, and MetroCards in New York so it will be great to have a re-loadable electronic card in Vancouver (better late than never). Translink will have the Compass Card system up and running for 2013 with installtion at stations commencing immediately followed by trials in the Fall of 2012.

I was secretly hoping that Starfish would win. The jokes could have been endless…

Wonderful!! Now translink can save money and potentially cut down on the number of fare evaders.

I liked Starfish most of the top 3. It goes with the aquatic animal theme (Octopus card in Hong Kong and Oyster card in London). My friend wanted Otter as it fits with the begins-with-O theme and is also an aquatic animal. Compass is a good name, tho. But T-Pass? Seriously? How unimaginative is that?

San Diego already named their farecard “Compass.” Unfortunately the Vancouver public who voted didn’t know this information.
We already have two cities with the named Vancouver, now with have two farecards with the named Compass.

’bout blood time! I find paper tickets in every pocket of every article of clothing; it’s as if they procreate, like glitter. I go through them like crazy. I swear they constitute half of my recyclable paper waste by volume. Ah, 2013 – people the future is at hand!
