Olympic Cauldron Re-Lit for Canada Day
byThe Vancouver 2010 Olympic cauldron will be re-lit for Canada Day 2010 once a few renovations are complete.
The site is surrounded by a fence and the distinctive 2010 blue-and-green hoarding that once surrounded all Olympic venues. The redesign will include a reflecting pool with a map of Canada showing the torch relay route under the cauldron. Benches for people to sit will surround the perimeter. [Vancouver Sun]
Located in the Jack Poole Plaza outside the Vancouver Convention Centre, the flame will also burn for other special occasions yet to be determined. Some say Remembrance Day in November is already on the list.
Update According to a comment from Bart on this post, for $10,000 you can request the cauldron be lit for a 24 hour period should you have a special occasion. I’m wondering… when would you like to see the cauldron lit and/or do you know someone or a company that would go for the purchase deal?

I received a tour of the Convention Centre not long ago, and according to our guide the cauldron can be lit for any occasion for a lump sum of CAD 10,000 for a 24hr period!
Love the idea of being able to ‘blow out the caldron’ on my birthday, but at 10K CAD, I’m going to have to just pretend. Besides, you can get a pretty good cake for 1/500th of that, I think.
I know that Canada Day this year will be extra special, especially for residents of Vancouver/Whistler! Can’t wait to see all the spirit again 🙂
Hooray for the cauldron being re-lit!
I hope we get to get a closer view than during the Olympics. They should decorate and light the cauldron on Halloween, though some would probably protest it unpatriotic or something.
I hope it doesn’t become a target for moron protesters who are still sore regarding the Olympics.
Are you sure it’s $10,000 for a 24 hour period? I thought it was a $10,000 user fee in addition to the cost of natural gas per hour.
They should also light it again on New Years Eve. I imagine they will also light it on February 12, 2011 – the one year anniversary of the Opening Ceremony. Maybe again on February 28, 2011. The one year anniversary of Canada’s hockey gold.
$10.000.00
Wow I guess I wont be doing that any time soon unless I win the lotto max this week for 50 million.
Then Ill have it lit for a year we will call it jays year.
