Blogathon Vancouver 2009 Event Update
byBlogathon Vancouver 2009 is just days away and preparations for the first-ever “on location” Blogathon event are coming along smoothly.
For a bit of background, on July 25th starting at 6:00am I will be joined by a dozen other local bloggers over at Workspace in Gastown. For the following 24 hours we’ll all be updating our own sites every 30 minutes (publishing a new post) while each raising funds for the cause of our choice. This is the first time I’ll be out and about during a Blogathon so it will be pretty exciting, although probably even more taxing than previous years. Blogathon itself has been around since 2001, starting in the USA and now involves participants from around the globe.
This year my personal cause is the Union Gospel Mission in the Downtown Eastside. “Union Gospel Mission is a non-profit urban relief organization serving Metro Vancouver and the City of Mission, providing hope for the hungry, hurting and homeless since 1940. If you find yourself without shelter, without food or without hope, UGM can help.”
The idea is that the more pledges and donations I receive, the more I’ll keep going throughout the 24 hours (and helping causes throughout the year). You can support my Blogathon campaign through my personal donation page, through which all funds go directly to the UGM.
In case my readers need a bit of added incentive, any donation of $20 or greater will get you entered in a draw to win a dinner cruise out on English Bay during the fireworks on July 29th. This is sponsored by Granville Island Brewing so you know it will be a good times with plenty of refreshments.
Finally, if you are a blogger that would like to join us at Workspace on Saturday, please RSVP so that I can plan space and snacks accordingly. I have a list of participants on my Blogathon page and the global list is on the official Blogathon.org site. This should be one whirlwind of a weekend but I’m extremely excited to see the difference we’ll all be able to make.

I’m gonna come down and hang out for some of the time and help provide ideas for articles. Also, I have a stash of clothes and what-nots to donate to UGM. Will someone from the Mission be there to collect stuff or shall i take it directly to the shelter?
I don’t know how you’re going to do this while moving around, but good luck to you. If I can arrange a ride up to Trout Lake and back, I’m going to try to liveblog Illuminares. Don’t expect there will be wifi, but I can always blog it anyway and upload it when I get back. I am absolutely, completely unbonded to the concept of “every half hour” but I will get my 48 in somehow.
I’ll be there from 5:30am but will be ducking out to head to the Granville Showcase at 3:30pm til about 5:30pm. They are setting me up to liveblog from there though 🙂
This is gonna be SO awesome.

Love it! Love the AGM. Thanks for doing this Rebecca! 🙂
Hey, Blogathon!
So that’s what all this is about. I dontated $100 to Shane Gibson for the Vancouver food bank. Do you have a blog post with more info about it Rebecca?
Ronald
Certainly, you can head to http://miss604.com/blogathon for more information.
Good luck to all the participants.
This year I am blogging for Richmond Animal Protection Society, it is a no-kill animal shelter that operates the main Richmond Animal Shelter on No5 Road as well as the largest cat sanctuary in North America (over 900 cats live there.) I volunteer there every week feeding cats, as well as donate monthly, and I am a member of the society.
I have collected stories about many of the cats that live at the shelter (provided by staff and volunteers) and some of them are heart breaking but happy endings as these abandoned animals now live in cat paradise. I will also be showing photos of the cats that I spend so much of my life with. As well as information regarding this amazing charity that has operated now for 20 years.
I hope you and everyone else can at least stop by and say hello on my blog, even if they can’t afford to donate now. My donation page will always be up, and I will continue to blog about the cats and RAPS, as I will be a life long supporter.
I’m 16 weeks pregnant so I can’t really get out to the 24 hour set up by you Rebecca, I have a silent partner (wishes to remain anon – she’s shy) that is helping me complete the 24 hours, so I (and my baby belly) can get my zzz’s. Thanks for all your efforts.
I have to register on Eventbrite too? How many places am I supposed to sign up for this thing? I already posted it to five blogs AND RSVP’d on the official blogathon site.
There is never usually an live on-site event. I created one this year. Since I am getting food and refreshments in, I requested RSVPs so we can plan accordingly.
I am in no way affiliated with Blogathon.org, I am a participant like everyone else. I thought it would be neat to host an event for those in Vancouver so that’s the deal – hope you can stop by.
Sorry, this getting up in the DAYTIME thing has me disoriented and even crankier than usual. Also getting told by a monitor it’s not 48 posts, it’s 49, AND they must be every thirty minutes, come what may. I’m like, don’t they have basic math over at livejournal? Or humanity?
I’ll let you do whatever you want as long as it’s a bunch of blog posts, for 24 hours, for charity 🙂
