Vancouver Pet Fashion Week
byI noticed an update on Twitter from @EcoPup, makers of pet clothing, about the kick off of Vancouver Pet Fashion Week. Immediately I thought this was something worth looking into and it turns out that this Sunday, May 31st, festivities will indeed be underway at the Roundhouse in Yaletown.
“Designer-dressed model dogs will strut their stuff on the “cat” walk in the latest fashion collections. Followed by a pet competition for best dressed dog in a fun parade. Bring your dressed up Vancouver fashionistas and they could win terrific prizes for model attitude.”
Pet Fashion Weeks have been around for a few years however this is the first for Vancouver. The event is free and open to the public from 12:00pm – 5:00pm and donations to support animal shelters will be accepted. Sunday is also Dog Day in Yaletown down at Cooper’s Park from 11:00 – 2:00pm.

Other than a necessary raincoat in the wet months, I swear to never, ever dress Jordy up.
I agree with Keira Anne,
I will only put a raincoat on my dog in poor weather. As much of a fashionista as I am, I don’t quite get the dressing up one’s dog as a doll. Although I DO see the use of ‘sunsuits’ for white or light colored/short haired dogs who DO get sunburnt by the way!
I remember watching Jay Leno and he’s such an advocate of not dressing up dogs. I really think it borderlines on animal cruelty. It’s like having my mom dress me up in a nice sweater that looks polite but then secretly all the girls and boys are laughing at me. However something simple and practical I think is the way to go. Why do we have to complicate mother nature’s creatures?
I agree, pets are not dolls. I understand if you are walking your dog in the snow or rain but really anything beyond that seems silly.
The first photo… the dog doesnt look happy at all. I think people who dress up their dogs are umm.. different themselves! Don’t dogs have fur for a reason?
I could understand a possible raincoat.. but a sweater, hoodie, etc?? *sigh*
@Tyler – Haha… yes, stuff like that is excessive. On the weekend, I saw someone walking their dog, and the dog was wearing a hoodie and jeans, if you can believe it. Not only did it look ridiculous, but the dog just looked uncomfortable and awkward.
However, with Jordy’s very long and very fluffy fur, a comfortably-fitted, waterproof rain slick will be very necessary come October and November. His fur takes hours to dry completely.
A pet pfd and a or a raincoat I can see them wearing but clothes to make them look more human like.. hell no.
All of the people I know that clothe their dogs treat them as a very important part of their family, some like children and they spoil them. Really, I am sure it is not hurting the dogs and there are many other people in this world that do not treat dogs or animals well, so what is the harm if people find enjoyment in this? I know one person who has a business creating and selling dog clothing, so it is an income for them, as it obviously is for others enough to have pet fashion shows. If this makes people happy, I think it is fine! 🙂
[…] Rebecca recently mentioned, this Sunday brings the first annual “Dog Day Afternoon” to the […]
I am the owner of the toy poodle Chazz who was dressed in his
hoody and jeans which has sold millions over the world. Why
because as Jen commented I and millions of others around the world love our dogs as part of our family and being in Vancouver
we were swamped with pet lovers from all over the world who adored Chazz in his trendy outfit which he is totally comfortable
in as I the owner would know.
We, my dogs and I, love to see people smile and talk with us about their beloved pets.
Chazz, my toy poodle
jumped into the lap of this wonderful little girl from the USA who stayed at the same
Hotel the Fairmount from the Make a Wish Foundation for Children and Chazz gave
this little girl the best time of her short life with her parents
taking pictures of them together, with my poodle Chazz giving her
tons of love, kisses and delight.
We helped raise money for the
Saints charity for the aged dogs and dogs in need along with helping children in need as well.
My pets love to dress in their
outfits and love the attention they receive!! We do sell tons
of raincoats and collars for pets of all sizes and everyone was
asking where can they buy the outfits my dogs were wearing including cat owners!
In a world filled with bad news we are more than delighted to make people happy and put a smile on their
face and at the same time raise money for charities for dogs and
children.
I for one should know that dressing up dogs in appropriate wear for the outdoor elements is good for the dogs and prevents sunburn in the sun as well as keeping the dog cleaner as well. Raincoats are vital and are great for keeping them dry and sandals, etc keep their paws clean and protect them
from the hot pavement and dirt and prevents paw chewing.
Clothing for dogs can
be used for all purposes and being involved in the fashion show
was the reason I was in Vancouver to help both Pet Fashion Week
and the Saints charity for pets.
We met tons of lovely friendly
dog lovers in Vancouver which we will always remember and will
remember us by putting a smile on their face and sharing dog
stories. I had numerous strangers tell me that my two pets made their
day the best by meeting my pets including the young, the elderly
and the beautiful smiling girl from the Make a Wish Foundation means more than gold to me.
I’ve tried dressing up my Sweetpea, but she hates it, unless the clothes are really loose like a scarf draped over her back. Then she sometimes turns it into a game and has fun wrestling with it.
I don’t have a dog myself but i will soon. do you know if fast fashion brands will be having pet accessories and clothing?
