Meetup Liveblogging: Vancouver Real Estate Tech and Young Professionals

Comments 13 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Tonight I’m at Ceili’s Irish Pub (or SkyBar for those of you who remember this venue from a past life) attending and liveblogging two meetups that have been combined with one special guest speaker – Scott Humphrey, Peak Performance Strategist. The Vancouver Real Estate Tech Meetup Group (you wouldn’t believe how many real estate professionals are blogging and using the power of social media) as well as the Vancouver Young Professionals Meetup Group, which I suppose I could be a part of as well.

Raul is here networking and being his usual hummingbird self and I’ve just met Steve Jagger of Ubertor who asked me to come out tonight and has already supplied me with a beer (the man knows how I work). Larry just joined us at the table in the corner as well. More to come with the liveblog as the evening progresses.

Update: During the mingling session before the formal portion of this evening’s event there’s some talk about Vimeo penalizing and removing real estate content saying that it’s commercial, which is not allowed. This is similar to the issue I had with Blip.tv a while back when they deleted my company’s account due to some product screencasts saying it was too commercial. Thank goodness for Viddler is all I have to say right now.

Update: Tim Ayres, realtor and blogger from Sooke, BC the said over Twitter (with regards to the Vimeo issue) “All is resolved. I was told to avoid video walkthroughs/tours of properties for sale, but vlogging is OK.”

Update: Scott takes the stage and thanks everyone for being here and by being here we’re all stepping up and taking actions in our business (so we get a round of applause). He does over 500 workshops a year and does a quick “hands up” survey about effort, health, passion, drive, results and pay off in our professional lives. “Everyone here wants to make more money… everyone in North America wants to be healthy.” We need to be committed to results and achievements – “how many here are 100% committed to making more money this year? …and how many here want to take their health and energy to the next level?”

The key word tonight is “participation” – “how many of you here won’t raise your hands no matter what I ask tonight?” [Editor’s note: my hand went up – too busy typing]

Scott’s first pillar for creating extraordinary quality of life: Clarity. Where am I going, how am I going to get there and WHY? The second pillar is that you have to get the best tools and strategies. The third pillar is integration and action. Don’t have customers – have fans.

Update: “There’s no such thing as a bad market.” What determine someone’s success? The audience says, happiness, balance, mindsets etc. Everyone is asked to stand up and clap their hands together, Scott also asks what is the natural position of your thumbs when you put your hands together. Apparently if your let thumb is over the right you are creative, sexy and a good lover. Right over left means you’re a thinker and you’ll be a millionaire. [Editor’s note: my right was over my left… sorry John.]

Update: What happens if you’re going down a road in life that you don’t want to go? What happens if it’s in the wrong direction? Any time that your knowledge comes up against your habits, your habits always win. “Now let’s get this workshop started.” People only buy for two reasons – logical and emotional.

[Editor’s note: Twitpic of Raul and Me from Matthew Collinge]

Update: Strategies, activities and mindset – the staples of sales. “If you do not have a plan for your business then you plan to fail.” Scott says he’s not here to pump folks up, he’s here to help us ask and find out why?

What do we all have in common? “24 hours in a day… family commitments… procrastination.” “Love your family and choose your peers – who you hang around with is who you become.” What is holding you back today? What separates the top performers in the world from everyone else?

“80% of everything you do in life is psychology – the other 20% is mechanics.” Scott says the lifeline of your business is the telephone; basically connecting to people, speaking with people, keeping your contacts etc. He said the telephone should be looked at as a cash register as well.

Scott goes on to tell stories about Michael Jordan who was able to contribute most of his success in his later years to his mindset training, “step up and own your court.” He also says motion is emotion – he never sits down on a sales call – he plays at a “level ten” with health and energy and that leads to success (this also pertains to the hand out).

Everyone is asked to stand and hold out their left hand while Scott asks, “are we going to have the BEST year of our lives?” and everyone advances their right hand to clap. Apparently it wasn’t enthusiastic enough as Scott rated the crowd a 5.5 out of ten. “You’ve go to be outstanding to get outstanding results.” After much clapping there are many high fives (high tens actually).

Update: Big thanks to Scott for coming out, the audience seems to have enjoyed his enthusiastic presentation – although I think everyone I’ve spoken to so far was already pretty motivated, it’s a really interesting meetup group. Also thanks to Steve for having Raul and I here to cover the event. That’s it for the live blog, if anyone follows up with a event post of the event please leave a comment below so I can link to it in the post.

    Thanks for the mention.

Scott delivered a spirited presentation on getting all aspects of your business, personal, and spiritual life in focus and on track. Certainly gave cause to pause and reflect on your tomorrows.

Its a bit disgusting about the guys over at Vimeo just deleting accounts. They have terrible customer service I have found too. If they don’t find your email interesting they just ignore it for days even weeks.

One guy got a response in the forums from Blake over 11 days after his initial query and the response was pretty lean. I have had this problem on several occasions and seen it with others too.

No where on the site do they say don’t do commercial video’s. Its a free service guys get a grip is what I say.

    Cheers

… and not one person mentioned the sales slump? Hard to believe in these times. Listings up 54 percent, sales down 43 percent … The MSM (in the pay of the R/E industry) soft pedals it … but I didn’t think you would.

  8. Miss604Tuesday, July 8th, 2008 — 8:55am PDT

@ Tim – I’m not in the “business” I don’t know about sales slumps and such (or what numbers stated were actually good or bad in the markets)

  9. TimTuesday, July 8th, 2008 — 9:26am PDT

No worries … should add that I think you do a fantastic job … and thank you!

  10. Steve Jagger – ReachdTuesday, July 8th, 2008 — 9:47am PDT

@ Tim – only half the room was Realtors… the rest was “Young” Professionals. So it was not meant to be too focused on real estate. Sales slumps was not on the agenda. It was about taking actions in our business.

Hope to see you out to the next one.
    Steve

on the sales slump issue-it was mentioned with specific examples from his recent trip to Calif and of realtors still doing well vs. those who don’t. I think his point arising from the example is that it is mindset, followed by appropriate action, and not the market conditions, that determine success whether you are a realtor or otherwise…..
that’s what i got out of it anyhow
Steve et al: good presentation-thx for putting it together (still hoping for comparison of the best options for contact mgmt; maybe Maximizer, Top Producer and ????? particularly would like to find one that is web based so can be accessed from anywhere!)
    but great job as usual
    Patricia
