Stanley Park Sea Wall Closed Again
byDid I not say somewhere that the sea wall still looked pretty sketchy and it didn’t seem like it was ready to re-open? What a crappy “I told you so” moment, the sea wall is closed again.
Heavy snow yesterday and rainfall today has resulted in another closure of the Stanley Park Seawall. Park Board staff are consulting with engineers after a 20 foot wide mudslide occurred around 10 this morning near Third Beach.
Stanley Park Maintenance Supervisor Eric Meaghr says it’s a bit discouraging after so much work this fall. “We had some feelings we may have issues. It’s the first big test of the area and sure enough we did have a slip off the sandstone face today.” The slide came down just south of the lighthouse, just a few hours after an inspection where they actually considered closing the Seawall for the day.
Early reports predict the Seawall will be closed for at least several days. [News1130]
If only we would have spent the restoration money actually restoring the park instead of paving more roads and making more parking lots.

A part of me weeps.
It’s past ridiculous at this point, really. I know a lot of it has to do with Mother Nature but don’t tell us you’re spending millions of dollars and one whole year “restoring” something that doesn’t seem to be safe at all.
I went the other week and people were commenting as I was walking past about the over hangs and how it doesn’t looks safe. A bunch of heavy rainfall like we had today will definitely make the soil become a bit mushy!
Though I am glad it was opened for a little bit. I got some decent pictures!
As Stanley Park and the Seawall are part of the tourist attractions the city loves to put forth as some of the excellent things about Vancouver, a Flickr group or an informal group to monitor and to timestamp the activity or inactivity could very well provide the proper motivation. Or are some simply waiting for appropriate money pots and the right time “just” before the Winter Olympics are upon the city?
Dude I am so sick of the way the Parks Board is handling Stanley Park. They are really failing the city right now. Where are the trees? Seriously. I can’t count the number of spots in the forest that have been logged out, and the Seawall’s closed again because of the erosion, and they’re putting in more parking lots. Seriously, what is the city doing? No more asphalt! Start making more green space, already! The park is eroding away and this is not helping anyone. Have you seen the three plans up for consideration for Prospect Point? They’re all awful, check out the Vancouver site. This is Vancouver, not Disneyland. This weird gentrification program the city’s got going on in Stanley Park with the new two-lane highway that more or less destroyed the fields between Second Beach and the Lagoon, the painfully slow and even more painfully inept restoration process, and now this? Think of all the water falling on the park and think of all the trees that used to absorb it which aren’t there, and all the erosion as the water follows gravity to the ocean, and all the fantastic asphalt that the city’s laying down, and how it’s contributing to the deforestation. No more highways! No more hard surface! The park is a thousand acres — how many acres of trees are left, and how many more are on the chopping block? It’s really upsetting.
