Vancouver Blogger Meetup
byThis was actually my very first Vancouver Blogger Meetup. I’ve been to many social gatherings before, including podcast meetups and unconferences, but on a whim yesterday John and I decided to head to the official group‘s get together at The Whip on 6th and Main.
I have to say, it all has to do with David Drucker. Since we met him at the podcast meetup in February 2006, he’s been our regular “familiar face we spot at social things and hang out with”. He’s a pretty great guy and has a lot in common with John and I.
The location was really great, and there was an abundance of yam fries and beers no one could pronounce. I think the best part of the evening was that there were bloggers there I hadn’t met before, like Tanya aka Net Chick. She’s pretty funny and knows her stuff – as is evident on her blog. I also got to see Jan and Pete again, we met at Northern Voice and all participated in Tod‘s late-night CBC tour.
Topics covered included Twitter, commenting and anonymous or dual online personalities. It was great to just head out to a new place (that isn’t 3 steps from our front door) on a weeknight just to chill with some like-minded people. For more info about the group or to join and take part next month, visit the Meetup site.
The attendees were: Pete Quily, MJ, David Drucker, NetChick (Tanya), Jan Karlsbjerg, Nancy, Jonathon, John and I.

Hey! It was awesome to meet you guys, too! 🙂 Definitely looking forward to the next meet-up, now that I know they they are happening regularly again.
Cheers, and happy Friday!
ps: I can’t believe I haven’t even blogged about the gathering yet (it’s been a crazy week for me), but I did Twitter it! LOL…
Hi Rebecca and John, it was great to see you guys again. I finally posted my own recap of the meetup too (and I borrowed your picture of Tanya and me).
About that picture: I remember that we talked about whether to use flash or not. If you look at the picture in an image processing program you can see that there are no details left in the couch back between Tanya and me, and in most of Tanya’s jacket as well (it’s all completely black), and my purple tshirt almost blends in with the black background.
If you want to check a dark image for this type of loss of information, try inverting the picture (negative colors), it’s a neat effect.
You omitted the flash to be nice to us, not blind us, you said, but that’s OK: I don’t mind suffering that little bit for the sake of your art. 🙂
[…] It’s always fun to bridge that gap between people you know through their postings, and this meetup allowed me to do that a little bit more. Rebecca has a nice follow-up on this, and Jan did the same in as well as posting a review of The Whip itself. I’ll echo his thoughts and say that it was a pretty swanky place, being my first time there. I hear it has changed, and they might see me there again if I’m ever in the area. Yam fries are tasty, and the beer selection is… Well, it’s good, but I just hadn’t heard of nearly all the things they had on tap. Don’t think anyone complained though. […]
Thanks for the kind words. You and John have been my ‘familiar faces’ too.
It’s kind of cool to see everyone’s take on the Meetup – A little like that movie Rashomon, but without the murder…
I’m glad that I have friends in a new city. It colors (whoops, colours 🙂 ) my whole outlook on my new home.
Eeeeh, duuuuh. That mysterious phenomenon I was describing above, yeah, it’s called “under exposure”. If I’d remembered that term at the time I could’ve skipped the explanation and just referred to Wikipedia. 🙂
hello there … i would have met you there had i been there … 🙂 my daughter was going through the worst part of her contractions, so i definitely couldn’t make it. thanks for a great recap!
