First Photowalk of 2011 in Iowa
byThis afternoon I grabbed my new Nikon D90 and we bundled up for our third annual ‘first photowalk‘ of the year in Anytown, USA – otherwise known as my husband’s hometown in Iowa.
The sun peeked out and began to melt piles of snow that quickly re-froze as solid puddles, causing my less-than-adequate soles to slip and skid. We walked by houses with frosted tire swings, porches laden with piles of firewood, and flags waving proudly on the front lawn.
Next we strolled past main street’s salons, boutiques, and hardware stores before making our way to the park down by the river.
The pond was solid, covered in snowmobile tracks and footprints, and we crunched along buried paths trying to chase the sunset’s light.
While I have much to get used to using a DLSR camera, I have hit the ground running and look forward to trying out my new toy on the streets and beach-side strolls of Vancouver upon our return.

Iowa? Cool! That’s where I’m from, though I too live in Vancouver now.
This brings back fond memories (though I’m from “big city” Iowa, so it’s not quite the same).
Thanks for the photos!
Awesome pics…looks freakin cold there! 🙂
Beautiful light and great shots!
As Alan Jackson put it in a country song:
“That’s where I come from……”
Thanks for capturing the spirit of my hometown.
Despite taking some photography classes last month, I still maintain a love/hate relationship with my Nikon D5000, but these outdoor shots are stunning.
It’s inside where it all goes wrong for me – if my children could just be STILL when opening presents, I may have a chance.
Thanks, Henry! I fought her on what time of day we’d head out for the photowalk, and as she will soon discover, those sunrise and sunset times are the sweet spot. 🙂
I think I said this last year too – “Anytown” looks beautiful! Just kinda classic, homey feeling with the particular beauty of winter. Keep this up and I just might move there!
